Part of our plan for this year's Italy trip is take a few days in the Amalfi Coast area. We want to see Mt Vesuvius, Pombeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. Where would you recommend we use a home base. We were thinking about Positano, Sorrento or Paestum. Also any special not too expensive Hotels, BNB or small appartments. Thanks once again, You guys are GREAT!!! Jim

From the transportation logistic point of view, staying around Pompeii (Torre Annunziata or Castellammare also) would be best. But I don't particularly care for that area, at least not for staying. Personally I love Positano, which is the pearl of the Amalfi coast and where I would stay if I were in your shoes. Although maybe not optimal for transportation needs. Sorrento is also ok, but it doesn't do it for me. I don't particularly like Sorrento (but others do, so). Paestum is too out of the way past Salerno, so I would go there only as a day trip when you visit the ruins, but I wouldn't use it as a base.

Thanks Roberto, I was thinking that Positano sounds really good. Why is it not optimalfor travel needs, is it hard to get to the train station . Thanks again for the quick response. Jim

We stayed in Sorrento and loved it. Our favorite day was the day we spent with Raphael. We hired him for a full day down the coast and Paestum. Priceless! Got the info for contacting him from Ricks book.
We still talk about that day, enjoy Italy!!

Jim, there is no train in Positano, only bus. Agree Positano is magnificent as Roberto says but only way there is by bus. We stayed in lovely B&B there with balcony over looking water, want more info, let me know. Enjoy, the coast is wonderful.
