We are spending two or three nights in the area. Which is a good place to establish a base to tour and take a ferry to Capri?

Sorrento for sure. Great town and base for amalfi coast visit also.

Sorrento. You can take the train to/from Sorrento & easily get to Capri via ferry from Sorrento. I didn't think I would like Sorrento very much & really wanted to stay in Positano but opted to stay in Sorrento due to the train access & in the end, I really loved Sorrento & was glad we stayed there. Its really a great little town!

Definitely Sorrento. Quick trip to Capri, great restaurants.
