Amalfi Coast

Folks:

Need advise. Wife and I will be flying into Naples from Sicily next May, 2017. Want to go to Amalfi Coast. We have read Rick's book but wonder what is best town to stay - Sorrento and take bus and boat or go onto Positano? Do we need a car?

Always great advise from you all.

We stayed in Amalfi. Easy to head north or south along the coast from there either by the SITA bus or take to the water. DEFINITELY DO NOT NEED A CAR!! A must see town is Ravello, which is easily accessed by the bus from Amalfi.

I rented a villa on the hillside in Positano a few years ago and we really enjoyed our time there. Last year we stayed in Sorrento and felt it was more accessible to the area. If you want to just relax and se the Amalfi coast then Positano is beautiful and I would stay there. You can easily visit the costal towns from there. I'd prefer to stay in Sorrento if you really want to explore the region, including Pompeii and Naples. Regardless of what you decide, you should not have a car. The costs are not worth it. Public transportation is affordable and reliable. Parkin in both towns are difficult and so is the driving. .
Have fun

I know that you'll get lots of advice to stay in Sorrento for easier transit, but for us, the Amalfi coast was our last stage of our travels and we were using it as mostly relaxation time. So we opted to stay in Positano because I've always wanted to stay there. We spent 3 nights at the Hotel Eden Roc in a room with an amazing balcony and view and just spent 2 days wandering around Positano very happily. We did use Aldo Limos to pick us up from the Naples train station and drive us to Positano - and we booked a 2 hour stop en route to have time to walk around Herculaneum.

Note that Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast.

What do you want to do/see? Sorrento is well-connected: train to Pompeii/Herculaneum/Naples, ferry to Capri, buses to AC towns and ferries back to Sorrento. So if you want all that, Sorrento may be best. If you want to spend your time visiting the AC towns and skip the rest, then Sorrento is not nearly the best.

As others seem to also imply, favorite choice of town to stay in is Positano but Sorrento is better logistically so there are reasons to stay there as well.
If you want to include Pompeii for example, Sorrento is easier.
Capri and Ravello need to be in the plans for sure, would be nice to stay overnight in either for a short time but both are easy to do as day trips with an overnight as well.
