It all depends on what your interests are, how long you have, your budget, and where you arriving from and going to....give us a bit more information and we would love to help you pick!

Sorrento. Town itself is pretty with views over Naples Bay. Easy connection by public transportation to Naples, Pompei, Positano, Amalfi, Capri and more.

If you stay in Sorrento it is easy enough to:

  • Spend a day in Naples (see R.S. self-guided tour

  • Pompeii for most of a day (4-5 hours with transportation time). Possibly also drop in on Herculaneum.

  • A day to/from Amalfi town, perhaps stopping in Positano or continuing up to Ravello (fabulous!)

  • A day to Ischia or Capri

That alone is 4 days/5 nights. You can even venture further south to Paestum although I think that's a bit far for a "day trip."

Sorrento is well-located for daytrips but it's not on the Amalfi Coast. Positano, Praiano, Alatri, Amalfi, Ravello are all on the Amalfi Coast. How many nights do you have?

I like Praiano as a base, you can stay near the water or further up the hill.

Thank you all for your great responses. I'm in the early planning stages and can't really answer questions about how long we'll be around the Amalfi Coast. However, another question popped into my head. Should we fly into Rome or Naples. I do plan on staying in Rome at least 5 days.

Your connection from Roma to Napoli may be faster by train than by waiting for a connecting flight and then dealing with taxi traffic (although there is a bus from the airport into town, but it goes near the train station anyway, and still traffic to deal with).

So I would buy the Leonardo Express ticket to Roma Termini and the Roma-Napoli ticket at the airport when you land, don't forget to validate for the LE.

Yvonne,
(My middle name, by the way) I have been planning a similar trip in May of this year for over a year. We are flying into Rome, taking the Leonardo Express from the airport to Termini where we will walk a couple of blocks to B and B Smart. After 4 days in Rome, we have made reservations on the Frecciarossa fast train to Salerno. I read that it is much easier to do this than take a train to Naples and then switch to the Circumvesuviana which is rife with pickpockets. Not a good thing hauling luggage as well! Salerno has lots of transportation options: buses, trains and ferries. At the end of our stay we will take the same fast train back to Rome the day before we fly out and stay at the same B and B one last time. Please consider Salerno!

I recommend Sorrento as well. Our favorite place in Italy. While it's not technically on the Amalfi Coast, it is so close it may as well be. It's a beautiful, fun, relaxing town. We've been there 3 times for a week each time and took the Circumvesuviana many, many times with and without luggage. It was easy, not scary at all, and zero problems. Sorrento makes a great base to go to other places, but Sorrento itself is worth a day as well.

Yvonne,

I'd also recommend Sorrento as a base for that area. While it may not "officially" be part of the Amalfi Coast, it's a beautiful city and a good place for to stay for day trips to Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Positano or Capri.

You might consider flying inbound to Naples and outbound from Rome. From Naples airport you can use the Curreri Viaggi bus to Sorrento (about an hour and about €10 PP - very reasonable. Sorrento would be a good place to get over jet lag.
