We will have one extra day for relaxing on the beach.... We're staying in Sorrento but have no problem taking a bus to another town. Any suggestions for a great beach to rent an umbrella and relax for the day?
I went to Positano which was amazing. The views and the experience of the town is really great. I recommend you take a bus from Sorrento. Don't bother to drive unless you are a thrill seeker, there are switch backs. The other towns on the Amalfi and Capri have similar beaches. We stopped at Positano because its the first town from Sorrento, and we thought the bus ride to be rather nauseating! The town beaches are not your typical sandy beaches-- They are medium size stones, so don't expect to build sand castles. There is a popular tourist beach in the northern part of Sorrento that has sand dunes. If you don't want to take the bus, you can access all the areas from Naples to Sorrento to Capri, to points on the Amalfi coast, to Salerno by ferry, so that is another course of action.
If you want to see a cultural tourist site with an average beach go to Paestum, which is another amazing place, but not especially for the beach. At Paestum, the views from the beach are nice, but the beach areas are not natural, they are the typical Italian tourist concreted- sectioned off beaches.
And I don't have to say this... don't miss Pompeii! If you are going to Sorrento and you aren't going to Pompeii you are making a mistake.
Thanks for your reply edwights. I've been to the Amalfi coast once before so I know what to expect from the beaches. Last time I was busy touring and didn't have time to rent an umbrella and relax on the beach. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for the best beaches for relaxing. I really appreciate your reply. I too love Positano and this time we might take some time to see Pompeii. :-)
Here is a list of beaches in and around Sorrento. Our favourite is at Nerano/Marina del Cantone. It is a pebble beach.

There is a fairly regular bus service from the front of Sorrento railway station, third timetable on the page.
Thanks for your help Linda! I'll check out those links. :-)
