My mother and I will be parting in Rome and she will need to make her way back to Rome from Amafli following a hiking tour of the Amafli coast. RS's book is apparently saying that its a 4 hour bus ride to Naples and then a train to Rome. Is there any easier way to do this and do you think there will be a problem with her getting a bus/transportation on Easter Sunday? Thank you!
Where at the Amalfi Coast is she actually coming from? Sorrento? Amalfi? That alone makes a huge difference. If she can get to Sorrento, the Circumvesuviana train (local line, not national) can get her from Sorrento to Naples in about 45 minutes. Then she'll have to coordinate with the national line NAP-ROM, which is something like 2-3 hours to Roma Termini station. Hopefully she's not trying to coordinate this ON her actual flight day but at least a day a head of time. Easter Sunday ease of travel is anyone's guess. If you think Easter is a major holiday HERE, just wait til you get to Italy and it's all about Holy Week leading up to Good Friday, then Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. See if you can find the Circumvesuviana schedule online for that time period. I do imagine all lines will be running, but you can't exclude the possibilities of reduced service or even a one-day strike as Italians are likely to do.
If you or your Mom are staying in Amalfi (note the spelling), your hotel should be able to answer that question, especially since you've got the Easter Sunday wrinkle to add in. It never occurs to a lot of people to use their hotel/B&B as a resource for these specific questions. But if anyone will have the answer, it should be them. Good luck.
Loretta - thanks for the feedback! She will be in Amalfi so its looking like it won't be as direct as one would like. Yes, she's doing this the day before her flight back to NY, so that's a help. Michael - thanks for the spelling help. I can barely do my own name so you can imagine how tricky its been to tackle everything after "Rome!" As for asking the hotel, have to tell you I've asked for assistance with 2 minor pieces of the other parts of the trip from 2 different hotels and they have been less than eager to help. I am thinking she'd feel just a bit more confident if she had some idea of what the overall route to take would be.
If push comes to shove, she should be able to hire a taxi Amalfi to Sorrento and then travel on as I mentioned. Private car services also do these trips all the timestraight from her hotel to the Naples station for travel to Rome or all the way to Rome if she wishes it. No, it's not cheap but it is also not exorbitant and the peace of mind and ease for a solo traveler it gives might be worth the price.
From the town of Amalfi, it will be much faster to go to Salerno and catch the train from there to Rome, and there's no change of train in Naples. The SITA bus website shows about-hourly buses between Amalfi and Salerno on Sundays, but it be wise to ask the hotel if Easter is an exception. High-speed trains go from Salerno to Rome in about 2 hours while the slower IC trains take about 3 hours (but at half the price).
What town will your Mom be in? Amalfi proper? Or one of the other towns on the Amalfi coast. With the excellent suggestion of hopping the fast train in Salerno (kudos, Frank!), a taxi to Salerno might be the best bet. It's 25 km between the town of Amalfi and Salerno.
Thanks folks for all the suggestions! Yes, my mother will be in Amalfi proper so its not sounding as bad as initially thought. Love the idea to get a taxi or car to Sarrento (realize I've likely spelled that incorrectly) and then the high speed train. She's working on getting the name of the hotel the tour will set her up in so I can further investigate how to get back to Rome. Again, thank you!
Sarrento? You mean either Sorrento or Salerno. That'll be a pretty important distinction when it comes to making the arrangements. :-) If you want Frank's scenario, you want Salerno. There's no high speed from Sorrento. Good luck.
