We will be traveling in June and plan on a "base" in either Castelrotto or Alta Badia. We've heard so many different suggestions, etc on what to see, however we want to definitely hike up to the "largest alpine meadow"?? Is that a particular spot or are they all meadows? Does anyone know where/how we get to this "largest alpine meadow", and suggestions for where we should stay when we'd primarily like to hike to beautiful scenery. Is a ski lift necessary to these highest sites? Do you have to take a ski lift to this "highest alpine meadow"? Thanks in advance.
The Alpe di Suisi is near Castelrotto. You can take a bus from Castelrotto up to Compatsch (which is at the start of the meadow) or you can drive. The meadow is very large and long. From Compatsch, you can catch a bus (different than the other one and charges seprately) that will drive you to many stops along the meadow. You can also walk to some of the lifts from Compatsch. You don't have to ride a lift up, but it is kind of nice to save you energy for hiking by using some of the lifts to take you to some of the trailheads. (don't worry, there will still be hills, etc. to climb) We did 3 different hikes when we were there...one was just above Compatsch and was pretty short. The second day we took the panarama lift up and hiked to several huts (where snacks can be purchased.) The last day we took the bus all the way down to the end of the meadow, took a lift up, and hiked all the way around the Sasso Lungo. We stayed at Hotel al Lupo-very nice.
