We will be in Bolzano area Sept 23-27. It's my understanding that many towns in that area have this type of festival where the cows return down from the mountains after summer. We will be traveling by train and bus but at this point can't find an actual town of a festival, only that there are many. I would hate to miss if it's only a bus or train ride away.
I have not seen one (best) definitive listing. Try alternative words like Almabtrieb or cow parades + Bolzano or Südtirol. Toblach comes up as a result in some searches. Not sure if this is close to where you plan to be.
Toblach is a 2 hour train ride from Bolzano with single change at Franzensfeste. Trains every hour on the 25th.
Jo……we saw 2 cow parades in Switzerland in September 2018….one was in Wengen on September 16 and the other on September 19…….I think you will need to be in a village to see one…..and one of them literally popped up one morning on our walk to town…..we saw some kids wrapping that yellow plastic tape along the streets to keep people off of the road……and then here they came. It was delightful……cute kids and families walking beside the cows that had floral arrangements and trees on their heads……so family-centered around each family’s herd moving down to the lower pastures from the pastures in the mountains.
Due to Covid, quite a few are already cancelled. This is unfortunate, as I myself will be in the area too. Be sure to check the status of your event before you go. The cancellation may come in the last minute.
Also, even if they are not cancelled, do you really want to attend a potential super spreader event? At the very least in Austria, people are not masked outside. This deeply concerns me and so I am wearing my N95 everywhere.
Good points about the festivals . Thanks everyone

I'll look into all that, Thanks Princess
I am in Austria. I just learned that the cattle drive I wanted to attend (and booked a hotel for this location) has been cancelled. Very disappointing.
So, again, check the event's website on the day prior to the cattle drive. Weather is another aspect to consider.
