Almafi Coast or Italian Riviera

My husband and I are in the beginning stages is planning our Europe trip for next summer. We will be taking our 10 year old and 15 month old on the trip with us. My mom and aunt may also go along. We would like to spend about 5 days or so at either the Italian Riviera or the Almafi Coast. I have never been to either so I am hoping to get some insight on which would be better for a family. Things to do, how are the beaches, food, ect. Any help or advice would be wonderful.

I don't squiring a 15 month old around the Amalfi Coast would be very enjoyable, it is all up and down. My suggestion would be the Italian Riviera.

Tell me your overall itinerary and I will tell you which seaside location would make most sense for you.
The Amalfi Coast and the Ligurian Riviera are not the only two stretches of coastline. They are popular in this forum because most Rick Steves' followers have been only to those two places, being specifically advertised by Rick, but Italy has over 5000 miles of coastline and neither place has necessarily the best beaches in the country. Actually many beaches at those two locations are not really beaches, but rather cliffs and rocks with pebbly coves and deep drops. Beautiful, no doubt, but not necessarily ideal for small children as they tend to be somewhat dangerous if they are not expert swimmers.
So let's see what other places you plan to visit, besides being at the beach for a few days. Some locations may make more sense than others logistically in your overall itinerary. Also specify if you plan to rent a car or not.
