Hi All, my husband and I are planning on visiting the Almafi coast late sept/early oct for 4-5 days. We prefer to do some exploring in the morning and afternoon and spend the evening drinking wine and having a nice dinner. That being said, do you recommend having a home base in the almafi coast area (if so, Sorrento vs Salerno?) or stay on the coast? Based on what I’ve read on this forum, is public transportation really that difficult to use? (Overcrowding, infrequent, etc)

We spent 5 nights in Sorrento in Oct and we were pleased with our decision. We loved the town, some of the best restaurants we ate at in our 3 weeks in Italy. We did NOT have a car. We did a fantastic day trip to the coast with a Rick Steves recommendation - MondoGuide --- www.sharedtours.com
We also took the train to Herculaneum and Pompeii (We liked Herculaneum better - not as crowded, easy to navigate - we used the RS Italy guide-book and it was perfect - taught us how to take the train and walked us thru the ruins with great detail. - don't miss the skeletons at the end - we saw many people missing it - they are down some stairs - - it is in the book).
We also did a food walking tour in Sorrento that was very nice.
