Hi,
We are going to be travelling in Italy over a 12 day period, arriving in Milan on June 29th. We will travel from Milan to Riomaggiore (perhaps via Genoa with a short layover or via Parma and Le Spezia), from Riomaggiore to Florence and, finally, from Florence to Rome. We will be departing Italy on July 10th. As we explore the train sites, we were wondering if we, for the 3 train trips, would be best off getting an all Italy Eurail pass. Will this cover all of the trains we will need to take?
Thanks,
Heather
No, Italy railpasses are a hassle and not a good value. Just buy individual tix. Enjoy your trip!
buy them in advance as much as possible and you can save a LOT of money..... check on the supereconomy or economy fares on www.trenitalia.com
You do realize that if you have a pass, you need to pay a seat reservation for all trains except the Regionale. That will add another 8 to 10 Euro for each leg of your trip. What is the price of an all Italy Eurail pass?
Railpasses in Italy are almost never worth it, especially since you can get deep discounts by buying ahead and the reservation is included on fast trains, nothing to buy separately.
A rail pass does cover national rail trains on all those routes. However, it's pretty easy to do the math and see that the rail pass is not cheaper for this plan. It also doesn't add much convenience, since most trains require a seat reservation, in addition to the pass. See also http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/italy-rail-passes.
