Alitalia, & Rome Airport Questions

Hi,

I would like to ask a few questions. I am departing from Rome to Toronto International Airport on November 15, 2009. I have been in Italy/France for 3 months.

  1. Do you know how much it would cost to check a 3rd luggage? I have 2 bottles of limoncello and 2 bottles of wine, which I will declare but also purchased clothes for the colder season since I didn't have much with me and the 2 suitcases I have are going to be full.

  2. Do you know what companies ship overseas from Italy to Canada?

  3. Do you think this might be a cheaper route?

  4. My flight is at 10:20am. I am debating whether to stay with family the night before in Fondi and leave early in the morning to be at the airport by 6:30-7:00am or whether to stay overnight at Rome's airport?

  5. If I decide to stay overnight at Rome's airport, can you offer some suggestions as to where I can stay besides sleeping in the airport?

I have shipped Murano Glass from Italy with DHL. You would probably be better off shipping instead of sending your fragile bottles of wine and limoncello in your suitcase, especially if you are flying Alitalia. It will cost you more to ship probably, but if you pack clothing around your breakables they should be OK. The cost for a 3rd checked bag usually is much higher than the second one. You need to check with your airline to find out the cost. Most accommodations can arrange a ride to the airport. The airport hotels are somewhat ratty and the personnel surly. I would find a nice place in Rome to stay your last night and have them arrange a ride to the airport. It's a flat fee of 40 Euro. If I'm not mistaken, Fondi is quite a long way from Rome and the airport.

I'm not sure how the extra fees is calculated based on the site that you provided. They give 'Number' 150 euros, 'Dimension' 150 euros, and 'Weight', 50 euros. Does this amount to 150 euros + 150 euros + 50 euros?

Sorry. I think I understand it now. If I have a third piece of luggage than I will pay 'Number' 150 euros. If that third piece of luggage is over the maximum weight of 23kg than I will pay 'Weight' 50 euros and, 'Dimension' 150 euros if my luggage is also over the size limit. Is this correct? So, if I decide to bring a third luggage but it's within 23kg and the size is also within the limits, than I will pay 150 euros which amounts to about $238.50Cdn.

Fondi is not super close, its a good 2+ hour drive and the road is all one lane most of the way to Rome. Either prepare to leave super, super early or for better peace of mind consider staying near the airport.

Have you asked the family in Fondi what they think about your trip to the airport? I would think that they've probably made that trip before and would have insight into what time you'd have to leave, whether it's worth it or not, etc.

Hi,

Thank you all for your messages. I have decided to leave for Rome tomorrow and stay 2 nights. I would like to stay in a nice and inexpensive place near the Rome Termini station and then either take a cab or Leonardo Express Train to the airport (around 6:30-7:0am) Sunday morning.

I also had my aunt speak to someone from Alitalia and the agent told my aunt that it would be cheaper for me to pack my suitcases at the maximum weight (32kg) and pay the 50€ for the extra weight. So, I decided to bring 2 larger suitcases at 32kg/each for a total of 100€. I am allowed to bring 2 suitcases since I flew to Italy with Air France and my baggage: allowance was 2 suitcases + 1 carry-on and 1 purse).

My suitcases are going to be heavy so I will store them at Roma's Termini station (3.80€ - up to 5 hours, 0.60/hr. thereafter and 0.20/at the 12th hour and thereafter). I spoke with someone from TI at Roma's Termini station about 30 minutes ago.

I packed the bottles very well. My mother taught me well. Italians like to double check and pack everything snug and very precise. I have 2-3 bottles that are bubble wrapped but still folded them in clothing and folded the other bottles in lots of clothing and cushioning all the way around with my clothes.

Let me know what you think and if you can recommend a B&B or hotel near Roma Termini station.
