Alitalia fares vary greatly on its UK and US websites?

I'm seeing a big difference in fares on flights in Italy, such as Rome - Catania, between the US and UK Alitalia websites. Sometimes double the price on the US site, after converting UK fares to USD. Any insights into why? Can I, from the US, buy using the UK website? Thanks!

If it were illegal, I don't think Alitalia's own website would let you do it. But I half think that their computer will charge your U.S. credit card the U.S. price. Please post a follow-up to let us know what happens.
