Looks like we'll need to pay for atleast one of our bags on our Bologna to Catania flight. Our other bag is a little bigger than their carry on size limit. Does anyone know how strict Alitalia is on the carry on bag size (our bag is 1" too tall). I've heard they fly Airbus planes to Sicily. Also, sounds like you can pay for hold luggage as long as it's online and before you fly. Right? Thanks!
Your bag is more than 21.6 inches? ( 55cm)
In 2014 flew Alitalia. Do not recall seeing a scale at the gate ( not sure if they had a weight limit at the time-; when we checked in, the CSR asked about checking our bags, and when we told her we planned to just do carry on, just looked at them and said 'OK'. Seemed puzzled we wanted to do that but had no objection to doing so. Have 21" bags.
Things may be different now.
My bag is 23" tall. We've tken on Easyjet, but that was years ago.
We flew Alitalia from Rome to Palermo (connecting flight from the US) and then Catania to Rome (back to the US). Our carryon bags made the cut, but I saw them tagging an awful lot of bags at the gate, especially if you're sitting in the forward section of the plane. (The planes we were on boarded back to front.)
I'm not sure if all of the checked bags were because of bag size limitations in the overhead bin (I did not see them measuring any bag or weighing it) or just bad luck that day. What I did see was a lot of coats and tiny bags that could have gone under the seat being shoved into the overhead bins. YMMV, of course.
Thanks for the information. I'll hope my bag will be OK.
Usually, Alitalia has one of those static measuring devices and if your bag doesn’t fit into it they might disallow the bag on the flight. What I have noticed - particularly on a Catania to Naples flight - is that they were more concerned about bag weight. Their bag weight limits on domestic legs are quite low (8 kg) so watch the total weight of your carry on.
