Does Alitalia actually check the weight of your carry-on suitcase. We have a Delta reservation from Salt Lake City to Naples, but several of the overseas flights are on Alitalia partnered flights. Delta doesn't have a carry-on suitcase weight limit, but Alitalia's is around 17lbs. Haven't packed yet so I don't know where I am at right now, but just curious if I will have a problem with Alitalia.

I don't think that you will be able to get a definitive answer to your question here.
Helpful people will post here what their experiences have been. But someone else's previous experience is no guarantee of what you will experience.
When it comes to airlines (any airline) weighing your carry on bag, they might weigh it or they might not. There's no way to know before the Moment Of Truth. Do you feel lucky? What happens if they do, and your bag exceeds the allowed weight? You should be aware of what the consequences would be if that happens - a small fee or a huge one? A minor hassle or a big headache?
Personally, my approach is: expect that it will be weighed and that they will be strict about enforcing their stated limits. I'd rather be ready to face that rather than the other way around. I probably should be bringing less stuff with me anyway...

For what it's worth, our flight home from Rome last October was on Alitalia, and my husband's carry-on was not weighed. However, he had just a 20" Osprey backpack that was obviously not stuffed full, and I didn't notice whether or not other people's bags were weighed or not. I mainly remember going through at least two security checkpoints, and people being asked additional security questions.
Edit after seeing David's reply--Both our bags were under the 8k limit. I checked mine since we were bringing home olive oil. So we were prepared to have our bags weighed; it just wasn't an issue for us.

I think Allitalia would only check it at the gate at no charge if the flight is full and the aircraft is small.

At the Rome airport in March, there was a machine to weigh your carryon, but as I walked towards it, the Allitalia attendant pointed to my "international carryon" bag and said bags that small didn't need to be weighed. I suspect if you are talking about a larger carryon, they might insist on weighing.

I've had it both ways with Alitalia. Sometimes bags are barely checked, other times they will weigh them and insert them into a static measuring device. I've had a bag put in the hold in Florence. That was on Dec. 31. I got the bag back on January 6th. Only big problem was I had an overnight in Paris without even a toothbrush.
