Alitalia - Any news or advice?

I'm booked on Alitalia flights for my trip to Rome in late October. The latest news I've seen on th airline is pretty bad. I am certain I booked a refundable fare, but Alitalia says my fare is not refundable (of course my confirmation email etc. don't specify the type of fare I booked). I keep wondering if I should just re-book my flights with another airline now, or if I should wait to see what happens. I'm afraid of how high airfares might get if I wait to long. I thought I would ask for people's thoughts...

Thanks

I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but Alitalia may shut down as early as Monday.

But, a lot can happen between now and late October. Another airline could take over the routes, some entity could pump money into the airline, other airlines might honor the tickets or at least give discounts to holders of Alitalia tickets.

Routes between the USA and Italy are too lucrative that I can't see them just being abandoned.

Addition...Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who isn't exactly poor, says he might personally back the airline financially to keep it going. We'll have to wait and see.

If Alitalia goes under, they won't have any money to refund so I'd say that's a moot point.

However, I believe Alitalia has a number of partnership agreements in place that other airlines ought to step up and cover any tickets that are on Alitalia. Especially if you are flying another airline partway (Delta? Continental? etc) your codeshare airline has some responsibility.

I'd cross my fingers and keep a careful eye on the news at this point.
