Alitalia and luggage

Will be traveling to Italy for the first time. My carry-on meets Alitalia's requirement for the overhead bin storage (mine's actually smaller than their " allowed " dimensions). My "personal" item that must be stored under the seat is 2" larger than their requirements. But it is soft-sided and I pack light, so I can "squish" it. Do they actually have a "sizer" for the underseat luggage that would show my personal item to be 2" too big ?? Or can I just shove it underneath the seat in front with a 2" sticking out??

I am trying to see where on their website they give dimensions for "personal items".

Never have seen a sizing box for the personal item, only the carry on. As long as it fits and it out of sight you will be fine.

I did see at the Alitalia site, that at Fiumicino, if your carry-on is under a certain size, they will tag it "under-the-seat" and it sounds like you will not be allowed to put it in the overhead bin.

I posted question to Alitalia on their Twitter or Facebook feed and they responded immediately. I was concerned because personal items listed (no measurements) included briefcase, purse, laptop, but did not mention backpack. They told me I could take a backpack as personal item. They did not specify any measurements. One thing to note, Alitalia has the 17.6 lb limit on carry-ons, so it isn't just the size. Folks on other RS threads have noted that they were not able to take luggage on even if just the tiniest bit over that weight limit.
