Alitalia Airlines and adding baggage problems.

I"ve spent literally hours with a well known booking outfit, who I have used before, who led me to believe adding luggage after buying my tickets for travel in Italy was a simple matter of just going to manage my booking and doing it there and paying for the luggage. the option for adding luggage didn't appear on the booking page so I'd rung to ask what it included.
2 days later and numerous hours of dialogue later, after being unable to access the page they were talking about, a connection problem, I've been told I will have to pay 60 euro per checked bag for the 2 of us at the airport only - in effect as much as 1 person's fare. Has anyone else had this issue or not and if so, I'd love to know if there's a cheaper way of paying for your luggage, apart from booking on the airlines own website! Thanks

Just curious, why not book with the airline's website? It seems that the problem is not with Alitalia, but with the booking site?

That's what it normally costs to add extra luggage, in most airlines. I don't understand what your trouble is? Or are t they charging you a fee in addition to the extra baggage cost?

Are your checked bags extra bags, though? Such as beyond, say, a 1-bag-checked-free allowance? Is it an international or domestic flight? And what sort of ticket tier did you purchase?

With most airlines the first checked bag is free on long haul flights, the second checked bag has to pay a fee which in my experience is at least 60 euro. Is that your case? Is that your second checked bag or the first one? The first one should be free with Alitalia or with most other airlines.

Alitalia has a carry on only ticket, which is less expensive than their regular fare. If purchased, the 30 per bag is extra.

Thanks for all your answers.
No apparently this flight only included carry on luggage, which is what I rang and queried before completing our booking and was just told to do something which you just can't do online, add luggage. On their website it says 20 euros to add a bag. Except there is no way to add 1 bag up to 23kg which is standard usually. Had to ring Rome and be told the only way to add luggage, was to pay at the airport and it'd be 60 euro each bag, really excessive I feel.
Doesn't appear as if anyone has been caught the same way and knows an another way to do it! but thanks for your time everyone.

Hi Raewyn, I'm having the same issues. Booked a flight with Alitalia through Expedia which mentioned extra baggage could be added directly with the airline so I purchased the tickets. Went to the Alitalia website and logged into my flight to view details and add baggage however, there were no options provided to add checked baggage!! I think 60 EUR per luggage of 23kg is a bit steep, should be more like 20-30EUR. There is light at the end of the tunnel though, one can add checked baggage during online Check-In which I believe opens 30 hours before flight departure. I'm hoping this will be cheaper than paying upfront at the airport. If this doesn't work, you will just end up paying at the counter anyway.

I am having the same hassle. I called and reached an English speaking rep at their customer service center in Albania (yes, you read that right. Guess not only the US outsources customer service)! Anyway, I was told that there was something wrong with the price on the website. . And that it would be fixed shortly. Ha! That was two weeks ago, no change. The guy did say that I could go through him, so that's what I plan to do since I don't think they are ever going to change that €60 fee. I think it supposed to be €20, actually. Alitalia really is a pain, and I hope they don't throw us off the plane like a United (g)

Hi

I have had the same issue, I booked via the Alitalia website but cannot add any extra checked luggage through Manage My Booking as you can with other airlines. I was advised it is 60 euro for extra weight and 80 euro for an extra piece of luggage. This is very excessive. A flight with Vueling cost me 30 euros for an extra piece of luggage and this is about right. With other airlines if you add extra luggage ahead of your flight, you get a discounted rate but not with Alitalia. I finally got to speak with someone at the call centre and was sent an authority to charge credit card form but it was not on an Alitatia form and had no specific details so I wont be giving my credit card details by email. And the cost was exactly the same as if we do it at the airport. Disappointing, as the airfare wasn't cheap.

Im having the same problem booking through tripsta. I contacted customer service and they told me there must be some "error" on the website because it's showing 60 euros to check in luggage. They've asked me to call their super premium rate number to sort it out, which I'm not going to do. Out of interest how much was the cost at the airport ?
