We are leaving Paris to Milan tomorrow. We booked the flight on British Air but turns out we will be on Alitalia. They won't assign seats online and I'm wondering if they weigh carry on bags. Our bags fit the BA overhead storage on direct flight from San Jose, Ca to Heathrow. I'm thinking our carry on bags are over the weight limit.
Your answers are here: https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Alitalia_Airlines/baggage.php. Almost always, a large carryon bag that works on a transAtlantic flight will be too large to be a carryon for an intra-Europe flight.
I had my carry on weighed by a counter attendant at Alitalia. It was overweight by less than a kilo and was placed in the hold. At FCO, not only does Alitalia have a sizing device, but there's also a scale.
Look if your bag is overweight.. and don't laugh as I am dead serious, and I have seen people do this at the airports in Europe more than once.
Open your bag and take out anything heavy.. coat, sweater, jeans and put them on.. oh.. but I am already dressed.. fine.. who cares.. you layer the stuff on .. and take it off once you are on plane. Wear all your heaviest clothing.. and layers of it.. No one cares then as long as your bag fits in the over head.
Or lighten up your packing a bit..
I'm not sure where I read this or saw it but someone bought their clothes at a thrift store for their trip. They flew over with a full carryon. But instead of doing laundry they threw the clothes away and bought a few new outfits on vacation. Nice excuse to shop. I may consider doing this. Sorry. Totally off topic.

In case you're wondering why the overhead bag gets weighed but not the under the seat bag, it's because of safety concerns. The overhead bag can fall on someone's head if you're lifting it overhead or opening the overhead compartment.
Thank you all for responding, appreciate help.
