We are leaving Paris to Milan tomorrow. We booked the flight on British Air but turns out we will be on Alitalia. They won't assign seats online and I'm wondering if they weigh carry on bags. Our bags fit the BA overhead storage on direct flight from San Jose, Ca to Heathrow. I'm thinking our carry on bags are over the weight limit.
Just got back from a trip in which we used Alitalia for the long-haul flight each way. They didn't weigh our bags. We did get one askance look from a gate attendant about the size of our (soft RS) bags, but we just told her they had fit easily on the previous flight, and she gave us a tag permitting it in the cabin. No problems at all. I don't know if they have different guidelines for intra-Europe trips, though.
We just got home and took al Italia for connecting flights from Paris to Rome and from Rome to Amsterdam. They didn't weigh carry on at all. They cared more about size than weight. However, they randomly picked out a few travellers on the second flight and said their carry on had to be checked because the plane was full. We thought we were about to get chosen but the agent wandered away instead. In two cases the carry ons were returned to their owners before we took off because the baggage hold door was already closed. Very odd. But that's my only negative luggage experience with them.
Its tomorrow now.
