Hello - we are flying out of Munich, arriving into Venice at 7:30 pm, and staying at the Hotel Giorgione (near the Ca D'Oro vaporetto stop). Would you recommend the Alilaguna boat (debarking at Fondamente Nuove) OR the Airport Bus to Piazzale Roma, and then the Vaporetto down the Grand Canal? What would be the most picturesque and pleasant way? How long would each take? Private water taxi is not an option due to cost. Thanks -
I used to advocate for the Alilaguna, on the theory that "Venice should be approached from the sea". But no more. It is not a particularly trip across the lagoon, and the last two times the windows were so dirty or steamy we could not see out.
Going the bus/vaporetto route, you get to enjoy a scenic ride down the Grand Canal, which is always a treat, unless the vaporetto is super crowded. But you will board at Piazzale Roma, before the crowds at Ferrovia, so have a good chance to get good positions ( we stand with our luggage
Rather than try for seats at the front---that is for a mid-stay Grand Canal cruise without luggage).
Time wise, it depends on the frequency of bus and boat. The actual bus ride is pretty short---maybe 10-15 minutes. Then you walk over to the vaporetto dock, buy your tickets, and wait for the next boat. Interval between boats is fairly short---like 6-10 minutes. Only the #1 ( slow boat, all stops) stops at Ca' d'Oro so make sure you get on one of those.
Agree with Lola -- the # 5 bus to P. Roma and then the vap. to the Ca D'Oro stop. Quick, easy, and inexpensive.
