Alessandria Train Station- Late night transfer

My family is booked to take the InterCityNotte overnight train from Alessandria, Italy to southern Italy in late October. A overnight train was a request of one of my children.

Our train departs from Alessandria at around 11:00 p.m. While looking at the evening train schedule from Milan to Alessandria (I understand regional trains generally don't need to be booked in advance—I was just trying to plan ahead), I came across information suggesting that Alessandria station doesn't have an indoor waiting area or an accessible restroom late at night. Our group consists of three adults (including one elderly family member) and three children under the age of 10.

I usually prefer to arrive at stations with plenty of time to spare, especially since I've read that regional trains can occasionally be delayed. Booking a late train from Milan with very little buffer time makes me nervous in case we miss the night train. On the other hand, waiting outside in the cold at a basically closed station—or walking around Alessandria late in the evening with several young children and our luggage—doesn't seem like a great option either.

I'd really appreciate any advice or firsthand experience. Thank you!

Looking at google maps, there is a Mcdonalds that is open till 10 pm in the station, then over the road are a couple of hotels and restaurants that will be open later. Maybe you can use one of these - I bet you are not the first person to ask!

From AI
Your Best Options for Waiting Late at NightStation Main Hall: You can physically wait inside the main ticket office lobby/hall, which generally stays accessible until the last trains depart around 11:00 PM. However, there is no proper indoor waiting room, and the station amenities (like the public restrooms and cafe) close much earlier, with the restrooms shutting down at 6:00 PM.Local Bars and Cafes: There are no 24-hour cafes in the immediate vicinity. Your best option is to look for a nearby pizzeria, pub, or bar slightly into the town center that stays open until midnight or 1:00 AM. Avoid waiting outdoors on the station benches, especially in colder months.Nearby Hotel Lobbies: If you face a multi-hour delay past midnight, walk to a nearby hotel like the Londra Hotel or Hotel Europa. They have 24-hour front desks where you can ask to sit safely in the lobby or book a budget room for the night.

If you are coming from Milan why not simply catch the overnight train from Milan? ICN 797 calls at Milano Porta Garibaldi most nights at around 22:15. In fact I'm not even sure ICN799 via Alessandria even runs in October, it seems to only run on peak summer dates as a relief to ICN 899, which runs 90 minutes in front of it.

I appreciate the suggestion! It sounds as though the alternative itinerary through Milan would have been a better choice for us. Unfortunately, I've already booked six non-refundable, non-transferable sleeping accommodations for the route through Alessandria.

Learning about the lack of facilities and security at the Alessandria station has really shaken my confidence in planning this trip independently and has made me wonder whether I've made other incorrect assumptions as well.

Regarding the comment about ICN799 not running at the end of October, surely it must, or Trenitalia wouldn't have sold us the tickets? An even worse scenario would be spending hours waiting in a deserted station for a train that never arrives. Is that really a possibility?

Did you found this route via Alessandria on Trenitalia's official site?

I'm curious because going from Milan to Alessandria to take the IC799 night train doesn't make sense, unless you are going to a town on the old Tyrrhenian line like Livorno and Civitavecchia. We should know your final destination to be sure there are no better options. For sure, there are many night trains departing from Milan to southern Italy.

Anyway, if you really need to take IC799, it departs from Turin's Porta NUOVA station at 21:55. Just take an high speed train from Milan to Turin and wait there.

Regional trains never need to be booked in advance, simply because there is no reserved seating on such trains and booking is impossible. You can only pay early.

lack of facilities and security

What makes you think there is a lack of security at 23:00 ? What's the source? Cops state that their office inside Alessandria station closes to the public at 20, but that they are in service 24/7.

Regarding facilities, the McDonalds inside the Alessandria station closes at 22 whereas - despite what Lin wrote above - the Ramen Bar facing the small park in front of the station building closes at 23:00.

According to German Railways IC799 does indeed run from Alessandria to Salerno on Monday and Friday to Sunday nights between 29 August and 12 December 2026, originating at Torino Porta Nuova at 2155.

So is not the answer to take a train to Torino, then travel in the day cars between Torino and Alessandria before transferring there to the sleeper/couchette cars?

That running schedule concurs with the Trenitalia booking system.

As the sleeper will not be booked for local journey, maybe the steward(ess) will let you in to your berth at Torino.

so it's a weekend relief train at the time of year,

why did "security" suddenly become such a big thing? Yes it might be cold, yes the outdoor seats may be uncomfortable (but so could the indoor) but who says it needs organised security? What are you comparing it with?

And having looked at photos I'm not sure you will be outside, the main concourse seems to be open late, even if the staffed facilities inside are not.
