Alba in Piedmont as a base

Yes, it is 2022 and our trip to Lake Maggiore and then Piedmont has still not come to fruition. In fact it has taken many forums as some of you may remember. Currently our travel group has grown to six. Planning Lake Maggiore is relatively easy with Stresa as a base, no vehicle, although Cannobio does tempt us.
My new question comes as the result of current lack of rental cars and outrageous prices. It may change in Sept. 2023 but we need to plan either way. The latest for this year is a price of 2000CAD out of Malpensa to Alba for 4 days(2 small vehicles) I can get a zonetransfer or taxi with Alba wine Tours for far less. so then I am in Piedmont with no vehicle.
I know, you can't properly do the Langhe, etc. without one so I am told.
But say for a moment I find either 1. a real cool quality property in the town of Alba or 2. a quality property in a village with restos, etc. walking distance. On top of that, our wine tours.
Any guidance appreciated or any accommodation you love?
We have our current eyes on Il Cortile de San Michele in Guarene...gorgeous, perfect but maybe that town is just too small.

We stayed in Alba for 6 nights and liked it very much. We did have a car, but went into Torino by train (for instance, one night for the opera) and I am sure there are tours that can pick you up from Alba. Four nights is what we try to make our minimum stay anywhere, and the only time we wished for fewer rather than more nights is when we stayed in a small town (La Morra) in Piemonte --- just not enough town to walk around in.

Then I would imagine Guarene would be very quiet as well. I just love the property we picked out there. Hmm.

I know. I fall in love with and "live" in many apartments or towns or agriturismi during the process. So hard to choose!

We stayed in Alba with a rental car but remember seeing signs advertising wine village tours. We prefer to go at our own pace, in our own rental car. Most of the wine villages are quite small but worth a visit.
How many hotel rooms do you need?
