Hello all...my husband and I will be traveling throughout Tuscany in late October and will fly home to the States from FLR in the early morning of 10/27. We would like to stay at a reasonably priced hotel near the airport the night before as our flight is at 6:25 am Sunday. We will have returned our rental car at the airport, also on Saturday. Does anyone know of a reasonable hotel for the night, preferably one that has a shuttle to the airport? If a shuttle isn't an option, one that has a fairly easy/direct route to the airport via bus or train. Thank you!

I would still stay in the city center.
The airport is very close to the city center (3.5 miles) and a taxi can take you there in less than 20 min from anywhere in the historical center at the cost of just over 25€.
Closer to the airport are the Hilton Garden Inn or the Novotel at Osmannoro (the only decent hotels in the area), but you won’t save more than 10 min compared to staying downtown. If you stay near the airport you are pretty much stuck in the hotel. The area is bleak and, at night, infested with Eastern European prostitutes. Not really the best the city has to offer.
PS: since the airport is small and all flights are regional intra Europe flights it is sufficient to be at the airport one hour to 75 min prior to departure.

And, to complete Roberto's excellent advice, a taxi may be reserved in advance by phone for a set hour, taking away some anxiety.

Great advise from Roberto. It's so much more enjoyable to spend your last night in Italy in central Florence than stuck in a hotel near the airport.

There's a brand new tram line between the airport and the train station --- maybe you could take that into Florence after dropping off your rental car.
