airport transportation?

Hi everyone - thank you so much for your great advice on this site! We are flying into venice with our family, then flying out of rome at the end of our vacation. Have any of you used a shuttle in either of those cities? Which ones would you recommend? Thanks so much for your help with this and have a great day!

We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a private car service (not a cab company) but only cost about 10 Euro more than a regular taxi. We always use them and have always been very pleased. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We send an email and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. You do have to pay cash (Euros) and the end of the journey but not in advance. The problem with having the hotel make arrangements is that you might wind up with a regular cab, a car service, or the desk clerk's brother in law. Happened to us once but there were four of us and only one brother in law so there wasn't a problem. In Venice there are several ways to get from the airport to the hotel, but not a shuttle as such.

Where are you staying in Venice? It makes a difference to the answer, since only boats can actually travel there.

I use the ATVO bus in Venice. It's pretty easy - here's a link to some information. http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venice_airport_buses_atvo.htm It's about 10 Euros per person each way. Luggage storage is underneath the bus. It goes right to the bus station/train station P. Roma and from there you can walk to your destination in Venice. If you have small children or a lot of luggage, there are also water routes into town, but I've never used them. They can take you closer to your lodging, though. I'm sure some other posters will weigh in with information of those.

I agree with TC regarding RomeCabs. We've used them twice in Rome for airport transfers and will use them again this year. Look at their reviews on Trip Advisor...they're extremely reliable and professional. You can rest assured they'll pick you up at or before the scheduled time.

Another vote for Romecabs. I've used them on 2 separate visits. Both times my flights were severely delayed , I mean 2-3 hrs delayed, and both times the driver was there waiting for me. If you are traveling with your family it's the easiest thing and will even send a van depending on the number of passengers.

As I travel solo, I normally use the Leonardo Express for the trip from Rome to the airport as its fast (32 minutes) and not affected by traffic. However, that may not be the most cost effective for a family so one of the cab firms mentioned by the others may be the best option in your case.

For travel from the airport in Venice, you can either use the Alilaguna water bus or take the Shuttle Bus to Piazzale Roma and then travel from there to your hotel by Vaporetto or whatever.

There may be other choices in the RS Italy guidebook.
