If you can afford approximately 100 euro a private water taxi will take you directly to your hotel (or very close) as compared to the regular Vaperatto (which is like a city bus)

We go often to Venice so we ride the ATVO "Venezia Express" (the "land bus") from VCE to to Piazzale Roma on the west side of Venice. Or we jump on the Linea 5 "Aerobus" - which is the city bus in the area. On our last trip, we paid 5€ each for the trip. Of course, the location of your accomodations will be may determine if this is a viable option for you.

Ciao Gary, We've been to Venice twice and each time I bit the bullet and got a ride on a water taxi from Marco Polo airport. It costs a hefty 90 Euro, but after a long flight its totally exhilarating! The boats are absolutely beautiful, lacquered wood, enclosed cab with some mighty mutli cylinder Italian powerplant that attains speed and grace. You get a view of the surrounding areas as you approach Venice. Once in the historical section the piloti throttles down to a low speed and you can enjoy the not often seen sights as you make your way to your destination. Piero from Pensione Guerratto once commented to me that he wished that he had a water taxi rather than a hotel! Cordiali Saluti,
David

If you took a water craft from the docks at the airport and it had a lot of stops, it doesn't sound like you were on a water taxi. It sounds more like you were on the Alilaguna water craft which is not a taxi. The water taxi holds up to 6-7 people and is normally a direct boat to your destination. It does not have multiple stops unless you are sharing a fare with other passengers. The fare is anywhere from 90Eu-110Eu. To answer your question, there are two bus lines that have runs from the front of the airport to the Piazzale Roma. ACTV (www.actv.it) is a city bus and ATVO (www.atvo.it) is a second private bus line. The runs are frequent and the fare is under 5Eu. You can buy tickets at the airport or on the bus. Once at the Piazzale Roma, you can buy tickets to get on the vaporetto water bus (main transportation on the canals) to get to your destination. If you indicate where you are staying, we can probably tell you which vaporetto to take to get there.
