Airport to Downtown Rome

Has anyone used the Rome Airport Shuttle from Fiumicino Airport to Downtown Rome? From Rick Steves description seems convenient and less than a taxi. How does it work if there are only two of us? Thanks so much.

To get directly to your hotel take an official Rome taxi (white, in the taxi rank). Do not go with the limo drivers who will hustle you as you leave the terminal. The taxi is a fixed cost 48 Euros. Yes, the train is cheaper. But when I am brain dead and fatigued after an overnight flight the last thing I want to do is drag my bags onto a train then find my way to a hotel from the train station. There are a variety of alternate shuttles. You can google Rome airport shuttles and find them. Most are shared which means multiple stops. You can save some money, but itโ€™s not as convenient as a taxi.

Hi michelle,

In addition to others above, I would like to suggest this company -- http://www.airportshuttlexpress.com/ -- (FCO to Rome's city centre and beyond in some cases)

I used them on my trips to Rome and was very satisfied. Check out their website if interested.

  • Directly across from Trains.

  • Reserving is easy and no credit card needed

  • Quick email response -- usually within 24- to 48- hours (Keep in mind your time compared with Italy's time clock)

  • No penalty or charge if your plans change for any reason. (It is courteous though, to of course, email them to cancel if you are not going to be riding with them so it can open up a reservation for another)

  • Manager and his associate speak English for easy transition at terminal. He gave me a discount if I paid in Euro. So keep that in mind if interested.

  • Professional and friendly drivers (they will put your luggage in the back of the van)

  • Bench seating as well as a passenger front seat with the driver if needed

  • You will or may share a ride depending on what time your arrival is and how many passengers are going in the direction you are going within a certain time frame (to maximize costs of course)

  • Pricing is not too bad for the RT ride which I booked to ensure a ride to and from FCO

  • Make sure you get a receipt for payment and keep it safe and handy. A driver "may ask" to see your prepaid receipt. It happened to me. But, I am sure the manager has the confirmation/payment in his PC system. Never hurts to have a back up.

Coincidentally, two years in a row, I had the same driver on one of the legs. He resembles "Gepetto" very much, lol. Wavy gray hair, same style, mustache, wire-rimmed glasses, same kind of build. I was waiting for "Pinocchio" to pop out from the van. His name is Sergio for real.

Another driver, another time spoke very good English and gave me a mini tour on the way back to the airport. He was very nice. His name escapes me though.

Each time, I was dropped off first since my hotel was in the Termini neighborhood.

So, you have a few choices. Have fun in beautiful Rome!

Taxi is 48 euros fixed rate
Door to door could not be an easier, stress free arrival
Get in the official taxi line, wait your turn few min usually-
Hand the driver your address and 48 euros cash
Driver will put your bags in/ out of trunk

Just the 2 of you in the cab

Are the taxis big enough for 2 adults and 2 children to fit in one with limited luggage? Would it still be $48 Euro?

There are always taxi vans. You may have to wait a few more min-
and yes fixed rate is 48- pretty sure that's for 4 people/luggage

The thing that's missing here is that actual location of the hotel. If it's not far from Termini - as ours was on one of our trips - shuttle buses from the airport can be an economical choice. We took a comfortable, safe, air-conditioned shuttle bus for just 4-5 euros apiece, and walked a couple of blocks to our accommodation. Easy-peasy.

We can highly recommend romashuttle.com, which is a private car service. They will meet you at the glass doors as you walk past customs and they will be holding a sign with your name on it. The cost is 45โ‚ฌ -48โ‚ฌ. We have used this company many times and will continue to use it.

Buon Viaggio,

Kathy, can you share the shuttle company name or provide contact information? Thank you.

What is the tipping protocol for taxis or private transfer companies? If your fare is 45 or 48 euros, is handing the guy a 50 note and telling him to keep the change a faux pas?
