Everything I have read says after landing at FCO, take the express train to Termini Station, but on maps, it looks like we go past our destination to get there. Alternatives have been to take the bus (use Roma Pass?) to the Vatican, then walk OR take the local train to Trastevere, then tram 8.
I was wondering if you have used the alternatives? What are your experiences? Recommendations?
Our specific destination is on Via del Pellegrino.
When you exit baggage in T3, there is a stand to your right that handles shuttles into the city that will take you straight to your hotel. In June it was €15 a person-just know that they will fill it with people going to other locations so you might not be the first to arrive.
There is a train from FCO that does stop at Trastevere, however, you will have to buy a separate ticket for the tram-we normally take that route and pick-up the train that stops at San Pietro, however, that station is at the opposite side of the Vatican and quite a hike to Campo de Fiore.
We booked Rome Cabs in advance (romecabs.com). Our driver met us in baggage claim and helped get everything to the car. He then drove us directly to the apartment that we rented. 55 euros for the trip. We had 4 people. It was nice to have everything handled after an overnight flight.
I thought that the Roma pass covered trams. No?
There are only the 2 of us and we will be traveling light! (So we don't need help with luggage.)
Anyone actually do the train and bus or tram? My main concern is bypassing my destination unnecessarily.

I've separately taken the regional train from the airport and tram #8, but it's really easy to use them in combination. At the airport, buy a regional train ticket to Trastevere. Tram #8 stops along the street in front of the station. Get off at the second stop after the tram crosses the Tiber river. Cross the street toward the small park and walk about 10 minutes to your destination. The street you want has an AS Roma (soccer team) store on the corner and there will be a church on your right as you start down the street toward Campo dei Fiori, then you'll pass numerous clothing stores as you walk along the street. Search Largo Torre Argentina on Goggle Maps to get a visual of the area where you'll get off the tram.
The transit pass that comes with your Roma Pass should cover the tram. Because it's a multi-day transit pass, you'll need to print your name on it (and date of birth if so indicated) and you'll also need to validate it first time you use it. Depending upon whether you'll use the transit pass again that day and how many days you'll be in Rome, it may or may not make sense to use it for the tram #8 ride.
None of the Rome transit passes covers the airport to the city center.
The F1 train into Trastevere cost 8 euro. You would then transfer to the # 8 tram which cost 1,50 euro. Don't use your Rome pass and prematurely activate it for this small amount. The pass is for consecutive days. Skip a day and you've lost some of what you've paid for.
We will be in Rome 3 nts. Isn't the Roma pass good for all public transportation for 72 hrs.? (With the exception of the trains from the airport.)
Has anyone taken the bus from FCO to the Vatican stop? My Rome 2 Rio app shows that as a viable route and it would be covered under the Roma pass, right?
No, the Roma Pass doesn't cover any sort of public transport from Fiumicino.
There are very inexpensive shuttle buses from the airport to Roma Termini train station and/or the Vatican area: Terravision or SIT are good bets.

I'd take a cab to your accommodation from Termini or the Vatican drop-off point. It would be quite a distance to walk from either the Vatican or Termini to Campo di Fiori, and a cab will be a heck of a lot easier than trying to figure out where to go right off the plane. Shoot, even easier would be a cab from Fiumicino to hotel for a flat rate of €48.
This is the info I have per Rome2Rio app:
The train from FCO to Termini is about $10 and bus 64 is about $2 - takes 49 min.
The bus from FCO to Vatican stop is about $7 + a 7 min walk - takes 50 min.
I'm just wondering if anyone has done this with the bus. Would we be safer with the train first?

I don't know what bus you're looking at but if it's SIT to Centro Vaticano Via Crescenzio 2, you are MUCH more than a 7-minute walk to a location on Via del Pellegrino near Campo di Fiori. I'm guessing it's closer to a 25-30-minute walk, maybe 20 if you're a fast walker. It's going to take much longer than 7 minutes from just about anywhere "near" the Vatican. Pinpointing actual addresses on a map will be helpful? The issue with Rome streets is that very, very few of them are a straight shot: you usually have to do a bit of winding around to get from Point A to B.
Really, with luggage, make this easy on yourself and take an airport shuttle bus (as little as €4-6/abt. 50 minutes) or Leonardo Express train ( €14/abt 30 minutes) to Termini and a cab from there.
If you can afford it, take a taxi from FCO right to your lodging. 48 euros total. And it's the fastest way to get there. Start adding the cost of train tickets or shuttle, and the 48 euros starts getting more and more tempting. Assuming you're arriving from the US, you may well be exhausted and not want the hassle of dealing with public transportation at that point.
Happy travels.
The reason the 64 bus takes so long, is the # of stops along the way as shown on this route map.

Add 30 minutes by train FCO-Termini, exit the station, find the right bus and you have a full blown headache. Take a taxi and thank us later.
Edit. Why go all the way to the Vatican stop. Corso V.Emmanule - Navona would be much closer.
You do NOT want to take the crowded #64 bus from Termini with luggage in tow. If you want to solely use public transportation, the best option is train and tram via Trastevere station. For greater convenience at not substantially more money (maybe 20-30 euro more for 2 of you), use a taxi or shuttle service from the airport directly to your hotel.
I have appreciated all of the advice. All good tips! However, Frank - that's what I was looking for. Thank you!
We arranged transportation to our hotel at Campo di Fiore though the hotel. There were three of us and may have cost a little more, but no crowded bus, train, or van that had to drop people off at other hotels. Worked like a charm.
