Airport Security - USA to Italy

After many months of planning, my departing flight is just 22 hours away. My RS backpack is full, and so is my RS daypack. I had hoped to put the daypack into the backpack and just pull it out when I get on the plane. I know the airlines allow "a purse and/or laptop" and so my question is, do you think that I can pass of the dayback as my "purse" so that I can carry both on board the plane?

Hi Lisa

I have carried both on with US Air, American and NWA all to Europe. No one has even looked twice at me and the day pack was pretty full. I think that some of the European carriers are a bit more strict though. Usually put all my souvenirs in the day pack coming back and check my suitcase as after weeks of wearing the same thing, I really don't care if it gets lost.

Lisa, great question. I was actually hoping to do the same thing. I am very interested in finding out what other travellers have to say about this!

A good deal of the warnings that we provide on this site refer to the budget airlines in Europe. They have very strict rules and limits on luggage. Flying from the U.S. to Europe, it's somewhat more relaxed. We usually fly United as I use my points. Their luggage policy is 18 pounds but I've seen the number of bags vary. I just returned from a business trip to China on United and on our flight to Shanghai, I almost didn't get any overhead space due to so many of the Chinese citizens with bags and bags of American cigarettes from the duty free shop. They were stuffing them all overhead. United didn't seem to blink an eye. I would be more worried about bulk and overall weight.

when we flew Delta, the smaller item counted as your personal item, so I carried the 9x14x22 maximum allowed carryon and the backpack (8x13x21!) was my personal item (with my purse inside it). No problem. Check your carriers' luggage allowance. HAVE A BLAST!
