hello, we are looking at various flights to nap. the least expensive stops for a short layover in ist (istanbul)..my question is safety??
the layovers are anywhere from 1 to 5 hours..please let me know what you think as far as an american being there..
thanks, steve
You'd be in the airport the entire time presumably, as even five hours is not enough time to go into the city, so I would not have any safety concerns. But time IS money, and that is a much longer journey, albeit on a much nicer airline that most American carriers.
Turkey is complicated, but it is not a major red flag either.
Based on the latest report from my cousin (a female in her mid 30s who recently visited) Istanbul is very safe. To me the issue of going to Italy via IST has always been the additional flight time. If you don’t mind, go for it. Just be aware that after March 2019 all flights are scheduled to use the new airport (ISL instead of IST, or Ataturk airport). The new airport is significantly farther from the city compared to Ataturk airport, therefore any layover is unlikely to give you time for a quick visit to the city.
thanks for your excellent timely replies.
