Have evening arrival at Marco Polo. Want to go to hotel close by then catch bus the next morning for San Marcos. Cannot identify hotels with shuttlle service under $500 a night! Help!
What time do you arrive? It's not difficult to get into Venice proper from the airport, so maybe you could just go ahead and head to your hotel when you arrive.
Otherwise, try booking.com or venere.com to find a place within your budget.
Evening arrival into Venice after all of the hordes and hordes of day trippers have departed the island would be PARADISE! Do not waste your previous Venice time by staying at the airport. If the bus is too much trouble then catch a private water taxi straight from the airport to your San Marco hotel. You'll have a fantastic start if you do it that way.
Courtyard VCE runs about $225USD (161€) per night per room with a free airport shuttle. Its about 1 km from the airport. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/vcecy-courtyard-venice-airport/
The city bus will get you to Venice and the desk people can sell you the return bus ticket.
On my first visit to Venice I arrived after dark. I stayed my first night in Padua and found that to be a wonderful and relaxing solution. I caught a bus at the airport and was in Padua in maybe 30 minutes. Spent the next day exploring the town, and then took the train to Venice in the late afternoon(about 30 minutes). It was far more enjoyable than an airport hotel.
I was very glad I had not attempted to find my Venice lodging in the dark. Venice is one of my favorite cities, but it's an easy place to get lost in. That can be a wonderful experience, except when you're trying to find a hotel in the dark dragging your luggage after you.
We arrive VCE at 6:45 if on time. 2 hours to get to San Marcos has us looking for our hotel in the dark ..... no thanks.
When will you travel? For most of the summer, sunset is after 8:30 p.m.. Most public transport runs until midnight. If you're still choosing a hotel, ease of access will certainly be one of the factors you consider. You can blow up copies of your guidebook map or a Google map to have in your hand upon landing.
In 2011, we had an early morning flight from Marco Polo so stayed the night at the Titan Inn. Very close to the airport, clean and had a shuttle to take us in the morning. We had 2 rooms...one with 3 beds and 1 with 2 beds. From my old notes, looks like they were 153 and 115 euros each, included breakfast which we did not have time to eat--which at the time was probably pretty reasonable as we travel as cheaply as possible. The rooms were typical European rooms, nothing fantastic but certainly serviceable and quiet. Hotel employees were extremely helpful and friendly.
