Have an early flight out of Rome and looking for a moderately priced hotel near the airport?
About 90%+ on this forum choose to stay in their Rome hotel on the last night; but that assumes you're already sleeping in Rome in the day(s) prior to your departure.
actually we will be coming in from a week in tuscany and just need to spend the night before the early flight out. The Hilton at the airport seems to be an expensive easy place to stay. I'm just wondering if staying in Rome and the cost of a taxi ride to the airport would be about a wash?
Okay, since you're not staying in Rome on previous nights, then an airport hotel becomes a reasonable choice (I've done that in the same circumstances), though many choose to stay in Rome instead.
There are no atmospheric hotels at the airport (you're not looking for ambience, after all)--and for that reason I'd say just go to tripadvisor.com or venere.com and find the lowest cost accommodation that, according to the tripadvisor reviews, doesn't have a lot of horror stories that go with it. The airport hotels are mostly for business travelers and, for that reason, should meet at least minimum standards of decency, etc.
For this kind of hotel, tripadvisor is more useful to you than reviews you'll find here, as they do hotel reviews as part of their business and no one on this forum does, except Rick, and he doesn't spend much time here.
Yes, tripadvisor is a good source. Most of the postings for that area are not good. May be best and afordable to stay near the train station in rome and get a taxi ride in the early morning. Is it easy and reliable to get a taxi in the early morning?
"Is it easy and reliable to get a taxi in the early morning?"
We have not had reports here, that I can recall, indicating that this was a problem. But this assumes that you arrange it through your hotel, so that the hotel is the one taking care of the arrangements for the taxi or shuttle, and not you.
Checking in the afternoon/evening before your departure, you'll want to mention this to the hotel clerk when you check-in to the hotel. The taxi and/or shuttle companies generally don't like to disappoint hotels, an important source of business for them.
This has been very helpful. thank you
You're welcome! Glad we could help.
Matt, I understand your dilemma as we travel often throughout Europe and often fly the "cheap flights" which require us to be at the airport around 6 AM - OUCH! Our primary reason to stay in an airport hotel is convenience and the ease of getting to the airport.
That said, FCO is NOT convenient for an early morning flight as there are few "airport" hotels CLOSE to the airport. The few that are close DO NOT have shuttles operating early and thus you'll probably have to take a taxi anyway... and probably a Fiumicino city taxi which may cost €15-25 anyway. That said, I 'd suggest enjoying your last night in Italy wandering Rome... because when you get to the FCO area... you will be locked in to very limited surroundings and resources. For a few Euro more, stay in Rome and soak up the atmosphere!
Airport hotels here also tend to be pricey - so if that's your choice do shop around on tripadvisor or a site like www.venere.com. For more info on getting to FCO early from Rome, CLICK HERE
I agrre with Ron. A shuttle from the hotel in downtown Rome should cost about 65-80 euro. We have to be at the airport by 6:30 am an dhav ethe shuttle set up with the hotel dell' regioni already. We have stayed at the hilton airport twice. it s convieient but can be pricey, so yo have to shop for prices. A note if you decide to stay there, they do have a free shuttle into Rome and back but the last one returns to the hotel at 10 pm
This May a 5:00 am pickup from Piazza Navona to the airport from Romecabs was €50 for 2 people with luggage. We were at FCO before 5:30. For the original poster though, staying out at FCO does seem to make the most sense for their circumstances. We'd probably look at staying at the Hilton, yes they can be pricey, but you can walk right over to the airport and not rely on a shuttle. Maybe try priceline or booking.com to try and get the lowest possible price.
In May I stayed at the Hilton Garden View near FCO which shuttled me at 6:00am- a short trip. I had been expecting my booking was for the Airport Hilton , but that must be for Priority Club members only. A few other travellers were similarly surprsed at having to change locations, even one American gentleman who had stayed at the airport on previous occasions.
