This seems like a stupid question but it is surprisingly the first time we have had a layover outside the US. We'll be flying from Chicago to Dublin to Rome - all on Aer Lingus. With Ireland being non-schengen I'm just confused. I believe we'll only go through customs and immigration upon arrival in Rome. (Right?) But will there be reason to collect/recheck checked baggage in Dublin? I'm sure I can ask this at check in but you know...I want to know now : ) If anyone can advise what the security/baggage situation will be for these flights I would appreciate it! Thank you!
You are correct. Your bags should be checked through to Rome (make sure, when you check in at ORD, that your baggage tags say FCO). And, since Ireland is not Schengen, you will not go through customs or immigration in Dublin, but will do both in Rome. On your return, you should go through US Customs and US Immigration in Dublin; your arrival in Chicago will be like arriving on a domestic flight.
Thank you, kind sir!
