Airlines/Transportation/Hotels

Hi All,

My husband and I already reverse a tour package with Rich Steve to visit Europe (Rome, German, Switzerland, and Paris) for 14 days in May.

We don't know which airlines we should reverse our airplane tickets. We live in Portland, OR. We plan to leave our city on Friday, because our tour starts next Monday.

Also, how do we get from the airport to the hotel thar Rich Steve recommended, or any good hotels to stay for 2 or 3 nights before we join our team on Monday.

This is our first time to visit Europe and we don't speak their languages.

If any of you guys have travel experiences, please give us some tips. Thank you.

I have not been on RS tour but I believe they do send you arrival info.

For flights use Google Flights to see what your options are then book with the actual airline

Where does tour start?
Getting from airports to city center is usually quite easy. A cab is simplest, or bus or metro, etc.
Depends which airport.

(ETA- I think you mean the 14 day Best of Europe Tour- so that starts in Paris.
Go right outside the airport and get in the taxi line. DO NOT go with anyone else offering you a taxi.
Hand the driver the address of your hotel and the fare (It is a fixed rate- I think 50 Euros to right bank, 55 to left bank- but that may have changed)

For hotel-you can usually book with the tour hotel for a few nights before it starts. I believe the hotels do set aside rooms for the purpose. (That info will also be provided to you)

Don't worry about the language, I am assuming you can speak English well enough. Most folks that work in tourism in Europe speak English.

Flights

I just did a quick search on Google flights
PDX to Paris- CDG on 5/12 then returning from Rome-FCO to PDX on 5/30 (gave you 2 extra nights in Rome, you will need it!)

You have several options- I'd choose whichever is in your price range, shortest/fewer changes and with a major airline
(United, Delta, etc)
Also check your layover times.

As I said above- use Google Flights only to research. Always go to the actual airline site to confirm and book

Here is link to my search-

DOn’t panic! Rick Steve’s’ company will send you all the information you need re first and last hotels, including* info on how to get to the hotel. Your tour starts in Rome and you should look for direct or one stop flights departing from Seattle, flights from Portland seem to reqjuire more than one stopover. The airlines that people seem to like are Delta and Virgin. There is also British Airways via London Heathrow, United Airlines, or American. You book your return flight from Paris, using the open jaw or multi-city function. If you are uncomfortable booking your ticket on-line, use a reliable travel agent. Kayak and Skyscanner are good apps for seeing what flights are out there, but always book with the airline.

May is not far away and flights are getting full, so you need to get moving on this.

To get to the hotel from Rome Airport (Fiumicino or FCO), the easiest way is to get a car to pick you up. You can book this on line from home and the driver will meet your flight. Cost is close to the set cost of the regular taxi. Try either Rome Taxis or Welcome Pick-ups Rome.

For the hotel, once you know the name of the hotel, email them to see if they can accommodate you for the couple of days before the tour starts. Make sure you tell them that you are part of the Rick Steves tour.

If you need more help contact the Rick Steves office, they are very good at responding. Rick’s Europe guidebook will be useful to you; your local library should have a copy.

You will find most Europeans speak some English and certainly the hotels will, I’ve never had too much of a problem anywhere in Europe. Always nice to learn, phrases such as good morning, good afternoon, please and thank you, and of course excuse me, do you speak English, in the different languages you will encounter.

Christine, you have to route backwards I think. It looks like the tour starts in Rome and ends in Paris.

Sandy, you will want to book flights open jaw, aka multi city. You’ll fly into Rome FCO and home from Paris CDG, unless you are going somewhere else after your tour. I find looking at airlines’ websites to find rates gives me a better picture of cost, connections, time.

As Christine said, take a taxi to your hotel. It’s just easier but always look for the “official” taxi stand. If someone approaches you, it is not “official” (you’ll pay more). It can be a little overwhelming.

As for language, try to learn the polite words in each language. “Hello, goodbye, Please, thank you, where is the toilet….”

You didn’t mention packing or suitcase size. Pack as light as you can for carry-on. You will be responsible for your own luggage. Hauling a large heavy suitcase up a flight of stairs isn’t fun. You probably want to look at travel insurance too.

You will have a great time. Keep asking questions.

British Airways will have a one-stop flight from Portland to Rome, and back from Paris. The stop is in London in both directions.

Some of the flights offered may be on American Airlines with a different airport for the plane change, usually Dallas-Fort Worth. I might choose that for the flight home, if the price is better, but not for the flight to Rome. It is generally better to take the Long-haul flight to Europe first, and change planes in Europe rather than in the USA.
