Airline tickets / Visa Requirements

Hello,

The Mrs. and I are going on a trip to Italy/Med Cruise this Oct-2018. Since it is a big anniversary, I booked the outbound tickets in first class, using miles for the ticket. However, trying to book the return flight, the costs for a one way ticket to Los Angeles are very high. I checked and the round trip ticket (FCO-LAX-FCO) was cheap, and I was thinking that I could burn the return flight ticket.

However, speaking with the airline, they were concerned about documentation that I might need to return back to the states, since the ticket would show a return flight back to Italy. Not sure if I trust the airline, but thought that I would reach out to people that might have been in this situation in the past.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Barry

This sounds like BS; but seriously are you an American citizen with a USA Passport ?
If so you might look at coming back on Norwegian or Wow airlines;
they do not sell one way tickets at those stupid legacy airline (United, Delta America British) prices.

For example, last summer I cash in miles one way to Zurich on Swiss Air from Chicago.
On the way back I bought a one way on Wow Airlines back for $390
What is the use of speaking with an airline when you can do everything online even book flights with miles?
But you do not say if you are trying to come back in First Class but in reality can't afford the ticket?

Try Norwegian Airlines (direct flight FCO-LAX, no connections). You have plenty of time to get a good one-way fare, especially in October. You're probably seeing high fares because you're looking at legacy carriers that don't really have one-way pricing in their business model...plus you're looking many months out...give it some time.

Thanks guys. I checked Norwegian and the FCO/LAX nonstop in premium economy is only 839.00 USD per person. Might be the best thing that I can do. Anyone have thoughts on getting stuck with a burner ticket? I'd prefer to fly Delta (my carrier of choice), due to my status with them, but I'm not paying 2400 for a one way ticket!! :)

I bet that fare will go down later in the year (by hundreds of $s). Have some patience. Also check out Turkish Air, also very good fares (I'm not sure whether they price by one-way competitively, I assume they do). I wouldn't buy a round trip ticket just to waste one-way of it, if that's what you mean by "burner ticket".
