Airline restrictions on carry on luggage size

I just read in the Wall Street Journal today that airlines in the U.S. are getting stricter about the size of carry on luggage such that a 22 inch bag that doesn't include the wheels in the measurement (so it is actually 22 1/2 inches) must be checked. We are flying Delta to Italy in October. Have any recent travelers experienced this reduction in what size the luggage can be for carry on? Thanks...Pam

Still depends on luck, but yes, new size/weight limits are more widely enforced. Earlier this month in Amsterdam Schiphol my rolling carryon (20") was weighed, not measured, and then my personal item was weighed as well.

It also seems to depend on the airline and the mood of the person checking you in. This is what we recently experienced.

Thank goodness for this. I for one will be glad to see the airlines enforcing the carry-one rules. May be that will stop the craziness we see with people boarding aircraft with oversize suitcases, giant purses, and huge backpacks. It slows down departures, makes overhead space a battle zone, and delays disembarking. Carry on luggage is great as long as the passenger is willing to travel light and follow the restrictions.

I've been on domestic delta flights that the carryon bag size was strictly enforced. Depends on the airport and staff. YMMV.

Last year, my favourite carry-on bag, the Rick Steves roll-aboard (slightly older version of the current smaller Rolling Carry-on) had to be checked in. It's now too big for all of the airlines. :-(

I'm back to using my old Classic Backdoor bag... that one never get measured.

Maybe the Rick Steves Shop powers-that-be should consider a 'trade-in' promo! ;-)
