Airline rescheduled flight

I need some advise, please.

I booked our one way ticket in June, 2015 for travel in May, 2016 through Kayak.com as recommended by the Rick Steves books I have read. One of the carriers, Lufthanza, had a schedule change on one leg of our journey to Naples. Vayama, who is the booking service, I think, for Kayak, stated they asked Lufthanza for an alternate flight. We were told Lufthanza said we could take a flight arriving us in Naples five hours later than we had previously scheduled.

This is not satisfactory for our continued itinerary after Naples. I have tried to communicate this to Vayama, including several Lufthanza flights that would connect to the other carriers we have the same day,
getting us to Naples about the same time we originally scheduled. Vayama has not responded to these suggestions, only reiterating the "best" was to accept the offer Lufthanza was suggesting getting us in at the later time.

I need to say, these are non refundable tickets for my husband and I. We do have flight insurance through Aliaz (sp?). Should I try to use this insurance? Should I try to call Lufthanza directly to arrange an alternate flight? Or, I have heard briefly about a "260 Rule" about flight reschedules/delays and try that?

I would greatly appreciate any help you could give us. We just want to get past this and look forward to our trip.

Thank you

Best to cut out the middleman and deal with Lufthansa directly using the Lufthansa flight code (Lufthansa won't recognize the third party/Kayak confirmation number or number locator). It can't hurt to try to get a better outcome. Hopefully they will give you the same service as if you had booked with them directly - if not, I would chalk this up as a lesson to book with airlines directly (especially if the third party doesn't get you a better price). If the 5 hours later flight is the only they could offer you, then have to take the offer (assuming you still want to go, which sounds like the case). I doubt they'd allow you to change dates completely without any fees involved. And of course Kayak will absolve itself of any responsibility since they didn't reschedule the flight and tried to work things out with the airline on your behalf.

You should read your insurance small print to see what's covered - no one can advise you without knowing the contract terms.

Oh my...so sorry to hear about this! My worst fear is this scenario.

Rick Actually recommends using a search engine like Kayak as a starting point in your price/route research and recommends booking directly with the airline "For maximum peace of mind, it can be best to book directly with the airline, which can more easily address unexpected problems or deal with rescheduled flights.". When researching my own flights the running theme I saw was to never book international flights with a third party site like kayak, expedia, Travelocity etc due to the exact situation you are in. Since you did not book directly with Lufthansa I do not know if they can help you. Cheaper is not always better...I would just take their offer and hope it does not change yet again. Hopefully someone else can chime in on the insurance issue since they ARE getting you to Naples and if you have any kind of claim with Kayak or Lufthansa since you have a flight. I hope it all works out for you!

As Letizia mentioned in their post, RS does not recommend that anyone book thru a consolidator as you apparently did. I have gone to Europe for 13 of the last 14 years and will be going again this June. I always search around for flight prices at different sites but I have always booked directly with whatever airline I choose. This has come in real handy when Northwest Airlines cancelled one of our flights coming home and twice when Lufthansa went on strike and we could not fly on their airplanes. In all three of those situations, and after much work on my part including treating to sue NWA, everything was resolved to my satisfaction. I do hope that you are able to work out a solution to your satisfaction, or not, but hope you are able to continue your journey. Happy travels.

More detail would be helpful. You say this is a flight "to" Naples, and then mention onward travel. Is that a connecting flight you will miss, or are you traveling onward from Naples by train or boat? And you will miss that because of the later flight?

In either case, Lufthansa has no obligation to help you when you booked with Vayama. You can try calling them, but they most likely tell you to go through Vayama. And it appears Vayama has already done what they can.

If it is a train for onward travel, did you book a non-refundable ticket? it may still be possible to change it, perhaps with a change fee. (I have done this with Italo and it was easy).

As for your trip insurance, whether they will cover the extra expense you incur in re-arranging your onward travel due to a schedule change depends on their policy terms. You can call them and ask. But even if they do cover it, it likely will not be until after the loss has been incurred. So ask carefully what will and will not be covered, and keep records and receipts.
