Airfares

I just purchased an air ticket to Rome, September, for $1160, I did chose seat selection for an upgrade. Why is Rome so expensive, popularity, I thought. Re-thinking a flight to Milan is $700, train ticket to Naples $14.00. I am thinking something is wrong with the $14.00. I know I would spend my savings in Milan where I would briefly stay, but I'd see Milan!
I used this website https://italiatren.com/

Anything wrong with my thinking? I have 18 hours to change my mind!
Many thanks to all

What city are you flying from that is one factor?
Rome the capitol of Italy containing Vatican City the capitol of the Catholic world has more demand than Milan so less seats= higher prices.

Don't use this website https://italiatren.com/ it is a 3rd party ticket seller.
You should use either https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html or https://www.italotreno.it/en.
Those are the direct rail companies operating the trains.
There are always super saver non-refundable non-exchangeable train tickets.
Is it 14 from Rome to Naples or Milan to Naples?

When we booked our airfare for our late April trip to Italy (booked the airfare mid-October), we found that flying to Rome was more expensive than flying into Milan and out of Rome. We saved a few hundred dollars doing that which to me was worth it.

My boyfriend booked our train tickets, but they weren't expensive so $14 doesn't sound crazy.

There are so many screwy things about airfare pricing. Milan appears to be the cheapest to fly into right now. There are many ways to get cheaper fares, if you want to game the system (fly into Milan and then on to Rome via a domestic airline, like Ryanair for example). I find it so irritating when I look at tickets to [insert city] and they are 1300, and then I look at tickets to [cheap city] for 700, where that ticket has a layover at expensive city for several hours. Argh. Of course it depends too on where you fly from, and whether you are willing to drive farther to a cheaper departure airport. When I travel with our family of 5, we are willing to do a lot for cheap fares ;)

Wow, that seems quite pricey to me. I always use google flights to find the best air fairs. Early in February, I bought 4 RT tickets to Rome for a total of $1746, departing in late April. While the flights are not direct (short layover in Montreal), the price was about 1/2 the direct flight cost.
