We are leaving soon for a 10 day stay in Italy. We will be staying in apartments booked through Airbnb. I'm surprised and concerned that half of them do not have smoke detectors. These are older buildings in the heart of cities with very narrow streets. Is anyone else concerned that this is not a 'requirement' for rental units to be equipped with smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors? Does anyone have any suggestions to be protected in these situations?
I wouldn't worry. Most likely, these are in stone buildings with meter-thick walls. Fire insurance isn't even a thing in most of Italy, You're going abroad; get used to different standards and cultures. At the same time, food quality and health standards are much higher than in the U.S.
Buy a smoke/carbon monoxide detector when you get to Italy.
Hi em,
Have you already confirmed with the apartment owner that they do not have a smoke or carbon monoxide detectors? Or find one who does. Of course, you can leave some of the windows open.
I never smoked. I stay in hotels and have always had detectors and ceiling sprinklers in the rooms. But I have no idea how some hotels, private apartments, private B&B's, etc. operate by the owners.
Google "travel smoke detectors." It may be worth the extra weight for your peace of mind. Also, it's good to be organized -- A suggestion: Before you go to sleep, put your PP, any money and cards in your purse/bag where it can be grabbed fast in case you need to exit immediately (for any emergency.)
Adding, as someone above suggested, look to buy (a battery operated) one at a hardware (or electronics) store in the neighborhood. If so, make sure you have an accurate translation/description in case of miscommunication.
If I'm not mistaken, it's not a requirement for Italy or Spain to have smoke detectors in residential units. If this is a problem for you then yes, I'd only rent a flat that does have a requirement. Probably better and cheaper than carrying a smoke detector with you.
