Airbnb Rental and the Italian Government Tax office

The Italian Government Tax office has asked us to fill out a form for our house rental in Rome listing everyone that will be staying there and confirming we are tourists, not subject to any local rental tax. They have asked for:

Name, Birth date and Passport Number

This came from the person renting their house to us. IS THIS LEGIT?

every Italian hotel we've stayed in takes a copy of our passport as required by law so I'm guessing this is the same thing.

Hmmm...No one asked us last year in either of our Italian Airbnbs.

I think legit because I have given my passport to be copied by some airbnb hosts although not all have requested. So how would this be any different?

Most hosts and hotels fill out the form from your passport info, but some ask you to do it.

Either they were tax cheaters who rented under the table or they got your personal data in another way.
Incidentally, I wouldn't trust a tax cheater to respect fire prevention rules. Or to have an insurance policy against theft and domestic incidents that covers paying guests that are not supposed to pay.

This is strange: it's not the "tax office" that wants those info, but the cops. It's an anti-terrorism law.
Tourists are supposed to pay the city tourists tax, while there are no "local rental tax" in Italy. I wonder if some city is trying to crack down on AirBnB. I'd really like to see that form.

We filled out that form in May in Monte Sant'angelo. The form is submitted by the host, but she had us fill in our info. I would imagine that larger jurisdictions have different forms and procedures or they would be swamped with paper.

To me, it's showing me that your AirBnB host is actually legit and operating within the confines of Italian law. That's the same information that a hotel would have to collect.

Yes very Legit. We have rented 3 different AirBNB's in Italy and each time we had to provided a copy of our passport's along with a nighty per person tax paid in cash.

I don't really trust any AirBnB to comply with fire prevention and evacuation standards required by OECD governments.

Our Airbnb host in Florence did that last year. It was spelled out in the listing if I remembered correctly, so I'd expected it.

I wondered if some locality is stricter with that than others in Italy.

We provided copies of our passports to our Airbnb hosts as well. (Actually they just took pictures on their phones).

In Rome, we were surprised by the city tax, not so much that we had to pay it but that the Airbnb host hadn't specified that we would owe 147 euros on the day we checked in, 3.5 per person per day. I thought we were fully paid up. Fortunately we had the euros ready.

We've paid city taxes in other cities as well.

Have a great trip!
