Our host in Italy is asking for our passports or IDs of all the guests to proceed with the registration by law and attach a legible photo. I have travelled before throughout Europe but never had to show Passport or give them a picture. Is this true for Airbnb's? or any other overnight accommodation?
This is normal and it means they are paying their taxes.
Because no-contact checkin is so common now, I have found this a great convenience.
This is standard, I think, and my own experience in my last 3 or 4 trips to Italy (2019-2024).
totally normal for Italy, whether you are staying in a hotel or an owner-rented apartment. It is required by law. If they don’t ask for it in advance you would have to do it when you arrive. This saves everyone time. And if you have “contactless” check-in like many AirBnB’s do, they must have it in advance.
OK, thank you all for that information. I feel better now that I know it is SOP.
