Airbnb- Good or Bad for first time travelers

I have been speaking to very nice people about renting their spaces in when traveling to Rome, Florence, and Venice. I only contact those with a lot of reviews. Is this a good or bad idea. They other reason I like it is because the owners of the apartments have been very helpful with where to go and have offered to meet us at the train station to help direct us. The other positive, is that we get a kitchen at every destination we are going to. We feel we can save money and also experience the culture by going to the markets and cooking some meals at home. Thoughts?

That pretty much describes the advantages of renting an apartment. We do that all the time in Italy.

We like to rent apartments but usually use VRBO.com. Why? Lots of support, overall I think better prices, at least they seem to have the properties that best meet our needs. Just one person's opinion, but why not shop more than one site?

I have used AirBnb in Italy and Germany with nothing but positive experiences. Yes, it is cheaper, and it is nice to be more in (sometimes) residential areas to live like a local. All of our hosts have been very friendly and helpful, it is nice to get to know them and learn about actual living in the city, rather than visiting it. I recommend it as long as they have lots of reviews, pictures, and communicate as promptly as they can!
