Hello, I found a good apartment to stay in Rome using Airbnb. Plenty of reviews, good location, owner is very quick to respond. But, she said it was Airbnb's policy not to allow posting of addresses in communication, so I can't check property on Googlemaps. That seems reasonable, but I want to cover all of my bases. Any thoughts? On Airbnb you can see a map of the area, and the owner said the apartment was in the middle of the map. Again, any red flags here? We are going in May. Thanks,
Bryce
She might be right, she can tell you what street it's on. Many Roman streets are actually very short, with the name changing to something else every few blocks. Do you at least know that? We're doing an airbnb apt for our upcoming trip in May. Which one are you looking at? I might be able to tell you if there's any concern about the area. (You can also get a very good idea yourself by using Google Maps Streetview.) Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post it here for some reason.
I used Airbnb for my Italy trip last September. Great experience, except for Rome. MOST information was accurate, plenty of good reviews, quick response from owner, etc. BUT.... didn't reveal that the were over 120 STEEP steps (5 sets) to get to the bottom of her street. Have you booked it? I got the address after booking and tried google maps, which showed me her street, BUT not all the stairs. It made a big impact having to deal with them on a daily basis after walking for hours exploring! I'd read EVERY single review and investigate further. You can PM for more info if you choose to.
Good luck
No street view with the listing? Maybe not everyone has street view enabled...or maybe I forget and you don't see it til it's booked...but I am pretty sure I checked out the 'neighbourhoods' on a few before commiting....
One reason for not providing exact address with the airbnb posting is that some potential customers will try an end-run and want to deal directly with the homeowner. I stayed at an airbnb a few months ago. My host said one man tried to make a "deal" with him for a lower price if he paid cash. My host told him "no." This would probably get the host kicked out of the airbnb program. There seemed to be street views of the general area/street for the places I looked at before deciding to rent. The outside stairs should have been mentioned in the posting. I found a large dog in occupancy when I arrived at my airbnb; I was surprised to see a dog there. Then I want back and re-read the posting and reviews. The dog was mentioned in many reviews. I realized I had only skimmed the reviews without noticing that important detail. (The dog and I got along fine.) So my advice: read the posting and reviews very carefully before making a reservation. After making a reservation you should be able to phone the owner and ask your questions. Airbnb is an American company. You can call them for further info. It isn't hard to cancel if it is done in a timely fashion. I think airbnb is a good operation; you just need to pay attention to the details.
I have a reservation through Airbnb in Rome coming up in March. I messaged the owner before reserving and ask the name and distance to nearest metro, bus stop, etc. Since the street is really short, with the additional info about the stops I did pinpoint the location in close proximity to what google showed when I got the actual street address. You could ask the distance to 2 different metro/bus stops that may help you hone in on location. (For me Cipro and Valle Aurelia were landmark stations I used for this.) I also asked about stairs, elevator, etc. He advised the apartment is on one floor but up 30 stairs from the street. I hope that's accurate!! All of the reviews are very complimentary of him and generally excellent, and there is no mention of stairs by reviewers so I am hoping that the stairs are reasonable to managing luggage.
Thanks to everyone for your very thoughtful and useful information! It's great to have such an informed and helpful group to ask these questions. Bryce
