After spending a few days in Venice, my husband & I will be boarding a cruise ship. My question: what is the best way to get from the center of Cannaregio neighborhood to the Stazione Marittima near the Piazzale Roma? We will be pulling 2 carry-on rollers. Also, what exactly is the people mover? Thanks in advance for info.
People mover = flat escalator. Moving sidewalk. Best way is a water taxi. Ask your hotel for recommendations.
Since you will be there a few days before boarding, you will have plenty of opportunity to get your bearings. Depending on your exact location, it will probably be very easy to just walk to Piazzale Roma. At P. Roma there is a large white building that contains the people mover which is a "train" that goes to a parking lot. Get off at the first stop and walk to the cruise port. Have done this several times and it's easypeasy. Let us know if you need specific info. Go to google maps and play around with the street view feature and you can probably "walk" the whole route before you ever leave home.
I just did this a couple of weeks ago also from Cannaregio. For us the vaporetto was best from Ca d'Oro to Piazzale Roma, then we took the People Mover. This is an above ground "train" similar to the Monorail we have in Seattle. Once you get to Piazzale Roma, look through the main traffic area and a bit to your left and you'll see the white and red People Mover sign past all the taxis. I think of it as being at the back or opposite side of Piazzale Roma. I found this site helpful. Once at the next stop we got off and just followed all the other people to the terminal building. We could see our ship from the People Mover car so it was easy.
Thanks everyone for your responses and suggestions. Lisa, what a helpful site - step by step instructions for the people mover. Three days to go and we're so excited!
