Air Reservations

What are the best sites for finding the best airfare deals. We will fly into Venice and out of Rome.

There is no best site to find best air fare deals. You have to search Google Flights every day or sign up to have individual airlines to email you information about the routes that are on sale.

I use Google Flights.

Some use SkySkanner.

Try both.

But unless I'm saving a lot of money, I always book directly with the airlines anyway. Google and a few of the others direct you to the airline sites directly. When you book directly, you have fewer middlemen to deal with, fewer potential change fees, etc.

Just be sure you look for "multi-city" aka "open jaw" flights - one ticket for Venice and Rome, not two one-way tickets, which is usually much more expensive.

Many people check sites like Google flights and Kayak to check out itineraries, then purchase tickets directly through the airlines. Use the multi city option when searching for flights for into one city and home from another

Or have Google Flights "Track Prices" (notify you if the price goes below a certain amount that you've set), so you don't have to check every day...

matrix.itasoftware.com is owned by Google as a service to airlines. It seems to have more flight information than Google Flights but doesn't sell tickets.
Of the on-line agencies I like www.cheapoair.com despite the name. Easy to use, fast. I would not buy seat assignments or other services through cheapo or any other agencies. There are lots of competitors. Still, it is almost always true that the best prices are from the airlines themselves. I only use an agency when my itinerary includes several airlines which don't sell each other's tickets.
Multi-destination search functions are my new best friend in travel. And I like Skyscanner in Europe.
