Air Dolomiti from Frankfurt to Florence?

Hello, in early October I’m flying from San Francisco to Florence on United. They’ve put me on a connecting flight from Frankfurt to Florence on Air Dolomiti. I’m taking an international sized roller bag and a daypack with me as carry on, but am concerned about Air Dolomites carry on restrictions as well as poor on time record.

Instead of connecting in Frankfurt, and I better off connecting at EWR (Newark) and flying to Venice, then catching the fast train to Florence!? Total travel time would be similar….

Air Dolomiti just seems risky. I’d probably have to gate check my small roller bag and heaven knows if it would show up in Florence!

Stick with Air Dolomiti they have 4 direct flights a day to Florence. You are underestimating the hassle with connecting in Newark and then connecting a train in Venice to Florence.

I take Air Dolomiti frequently from either Frankfurt and Munich to Bologna and Venice. The planes are very small and the overhead is not standard size when I fly. I have a smaller roller bag and it fits. I don't pay much attention but I think the roller bags can fit sideways if everyone doesn't have one. I have flown into Venice and taken the train elsewhere but it might be easier and less tiring for you to take the plane to Florence.

It’s an Embraer 190. It’s a regional jet. I’ve flown from Munich or Frankfurt to Florence and back on AirDolomiti more times that I can remember. Never had issues with Air Dolomiti, which by the way is an airline part of the Lufthansa Group. There is no way I would inconvenience myself with some strange flight combination because of the size of the overhead compartment, which is adequate for a carry on (you might need to place it parallel rather than perpendicular).

We took an Air Dolomiti flight on the Embraer in April, Zurich to Florence. No problem whatsoever.

Some Air Dolomiti flights from FLR to FRA (and viceversa) are on Embraer 195, which is a slightly longer version of the E190. The overhead compartments are however the same and will be adequate for your carry on.

Jay, in the above comment, probably meant that he flew from Munich not Zurich, since Air Dolomiti does not operate flights from Florence to Zurich.

I have also flown Air Dolomiti as my connecting flight into Florence, Rome etc. more times than I can count, and never had my carryon bag gate checked.
If your bag is gate checked, it’s one short flight!
It’s perfectly fine……why would you think it is risky?!?
If it’s part of your original United Star Alliance ticket from home, just stick with it.
Florence is easy to arrive into, and easy to then get the Tramvia into the city centre.
Have you connected flights in Europe before?
If not , lots of advice for you here on the forum to make it easier.

The maximum weight for hand baggage is 8kg and dimensions for carry-on baggage: max 55x40x23cm.
For Economy Class fares only one item is included; the hand baggage allowance in Business class fares includes two pieces of carry-on baggage, each up to 8 kg.
We have adapted our baggage regulations for you so that every piece of hand luggage can now be checked in free of charge – even if you have booked an Economy Light fare.
If the free hand baggage allowance is exceeded in terms of number, dimensions and/or weight, the fee for excess baggage will be charged.

I have not been on Air Dolomiti but I read the above to mean you get just one piece to carry on. ( non biz class)

For those that use Air Dolomiti, are you allowed a 'personal item' in addition to the carry on bag?
