We are looking at places to stay in Rome. We have a couple of seniors, 3 30-somethings and a baby. Would you recommend we get rooms with air conditioning? Is it hot in Rome in June? We were there in August once and would have died without it.
My opinion is to get A/C. The "average" high in June is 79. (For comparison, the same site says the average high in August is 85.)
It can go either way. Three years ago it was so cold the first week of June that sidewalk cafe didn't open. A year later it was very pleasant. Neither time required A/C. No idea for this year
Early June or later June? Three years ago in early June, no, you wouldn't have needed it, a week or so later and you would have. The odds are that you will want it though.
I would definately get it, when Rome is hot, its very very hot.
All those stone buildings, ugh, its like being in an oven sometimes..
Plus with seniors and a baby you really do need to consider their lesser abilities to deal with extreme temps.
Get it. If you don't need it no biggie, if you need it ,, it will be a lifesaver.
Yes, ac is necessary in June. Rome is loud, you will probably have difficulty sleeping with the windows open. Plus Italy doesn't use window screens - if you sleep with the windows open the mosquitoes will bite you!
Yes - as others have said, you won't know until it is too late that you should have gotten the a/c. We were in Tuscany June 2 years ago and hearing from our B&B hosts that Rome was 90-100 that same week.
Samsn is correct. Even if the heat is bearable, the noise and potential mosquitos is something you don't want to have to deal with by keeping your window open at night. AC allows you to shut the windows and keep out all of that 24-hour non-stop noise in Rome.
Lindsay - Rome does get hot during the day but is cooler at night. We did not have ac in mid-June and while I would never go to Florida after April without great ac - in Rome we were fine. The tile floors and high ceilings keep things cool with a fan.
We were in Rome at the end of June 2002 and it was terribly hot and really glad that the place we stayed (Hotel Italia in Rick's Rome book) had A/C and a ceiling fan.
Were there again in Mid-August 2006 and it was really hot! Stayed at Hotel Smeraldo (in Rick's book) which is in a great location just a couple minutes from Campo di Fiori. This place had awesome A/C--the best we have ever experienced in Europe. We even got cold at night and added extra blankets. It felt so great to come back and relax afer sightseeing. The rooms are smallish but very nice with nice bathrooms and a bidet which came in handy for soaking the feet!
