Air Canada carry-on restrictions

I'll be flying Air Canada/United from LAX thru Montreal to Rome. I want to carry on baggage which is within size restrictions of most airlines. 22x14x9 (including wheels but sold as 21x14x9) Air Canada's website states 21.5 including wheels. Has anyone had any recent experience flying with Air Canada to Rome with carryon wheeled luggage? If so, are they strict to the policy? Thanks I really don't want to check my bag!

Airlines have gotten more strict with their carry-on policies in the last year. I wouldn't chance it if you don't wish to check your bag. Donna

Hi Susy. I fly AC frequently, including a trip to Nice this March through Montreal, to Frankfurt, then on to Nice. I have never had a problem with the 22 inch wheeled I used to have; I have a new bag for carryon but I've never actually measured it. This past trip I carried on my roll aboard, a medium sized backpack (I don't know the measurements) and my 11 inch computer in its small case. I had my trench coat over my arm. I did not have a problem at all. The backpack easily fit under the seat with the computer; the wheeled bag and coat in the overhead compartment. A couple of years ago I flew to Venice via Frankfurt with similar bags without any problems. The only time I heard questions asked flying to Europe was with codeshared Luftansa flights; the FA's commented to a woman with a larger rollaboard bag (we were already on the plane while she was trying to fit her rollaboard in the overhead bins). I have had problems with Air Transat flying to Mexico; I had to take some things out of a bag as they said it was too heavy. Have a great trip.

Thanks so much for your helpful replies. I'll hope for the best and go with the flow. I'll be travelling with my daughter who just graduated from college and we will each put a set of clothes in the other's bag just in case of forced check and chance of lost luggage. So excited...we leave next weekend!

I fly Air Canada frequently. I've also brought on a 22" carry-on with no problem along with a backpack. On occassion I have seen some incidents with other people bringing on board something that just won't go into the overhead. In those cases, they take the bag back up to the front, tag it and it goes under. But when the plane lands, they bring it back up to the exit for the person to take as opposed to having to go to baggage claim.

I flew AC last year from Toronto to Rome. I have a 22" Travel Pro roller bag and I have carried it on many times. No one ever questioned the bag until that AC flight. I carried it on anyway... ;-)

Susy, I've been travelling with Air Canada for most of my trips in the last few years, and have flown the route from Montreal to Rome. I usually check my large Backpack and just carry-on my Daypack and Camera bag. In my experience, AC has always been somewhat "flexible" in terms of carry-on luggage size, and I doubt that they would "split hairs" if a device was half an inch different from the regulations (but of course that always depends on the interpretation of the staff at the check-in desk). Happy travels! @ Charlie, Thanks for the reminder. I spotted this post last night and had intended to reply then, but got "distracted" by others.
