I haven't stayed at Ai Tagliapietra yet, but we have booked with them for our Sept 2009 trip. Lorenzo was really fast at getting back to us & was quite friendly. We look forward to staying there, since we have read nothing but good reviews about it. Have you already booked or just considering it?

We stayed at Hotel Paba. The reviews are dead-on. The place is small, but neat as a pin. The staff is extremely helpful and gave us great restaurant recommendations. Breakfast is served in your room, which is a nice way to start the day. We had one person call for it while the other showered. Room is a good size.

They do have an elevator, but it's a little tricky and it's just as easy to use the stairs. There isn't much to the hotel besides the room so if you want another place to hang out, you probably will be disappointed. The lobby is not very big. There isn't much of a view, but it's literally around the corner from the Colosseum (though you have to walk a bit and go down some stairs to actually reach it) and it's also quite close (but more stairs) to St. Peters' in Chains.

We didn't notice any noise problems, but if you don't like firm beds, I wouldn't recommend it. The mattresses are EXTREMELY hard.

All in all, I'd stay there again.
