Agriturismo with family

Hey all,

I'm planning a trip to Italy in mid-September and would love some advice. It'll be me, my wife, our 5-year-old daughter, and our 1-year-old son. We’ll be spending 5 days in Florence and another 5 days exploring the rest of Tuscany.

We're deciding whether to use Siena as a base or stay at an agriturismo. I love the idea of the countryside experience, but I’m not sure how practical it is with two young kids—especially since we plan to visit several towns like Montepulciano, San Gimignano, and Siena itself. I’m also unsure how kid-friendly many agriturismos are.

Any insight or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I would strongly recommend a base in the countryside, for the sake of the kids. I can’t speak for all agriturismi, but in general I think you will find them much more accommodating of kids than a hotel or apartment in Siena. You have enough time to shop online for an agriturismo that offers the kids a place to run around, perhaps with a play structure or even a pool. They (and you) will appreciate that free space after spending the day in the car and touring towns. I just two weeks ago finished two weeks of travel with my two young grandkids (and their parents), including a week at a farmhouse in Tuscany and as much as the adults enjoyed the hill towns (including Montepulciano), the kids were happy to be back at the farm. Another consideration to consider is the fact that driving in Siena is pretty restricted, and you may have to park outside of the old town and use the escalators to get to your accommodations. Doing that every time you day trip can be stressful.

That sounds amazing. I’m sold. Any idea where to find them? Is it just booking or Airbnb?

We went to italy with our twins when they were 10 y/o many years ago. We stayed five nights at an agriturismo in Tuscany and it was the best part of the trip. We did several day trips from there (one was to Siena) and also had two days hanging at the pool. It was in the middle of our trip and was our "vacation from our vacation" and one of the most memorable parts. There was also another family there with children close in age, so of course that was a bonus for our daughters.

EDIT: we stayed at Collelungo in Castellina in Chianti. I have no idea what their reviews are now, but there was also one about 5 or 10 minutes from us, closer to town where we stopped to asked directions that looked very nice as well.

Hello.
I won't be there until next year, but an agriturismo that has been recommended to me by my sisters that have been there a few times and a friend that has been there once a year for years (and is there now) is in Chianti. The web address is www.masseto.it. It does have a swimming pool and looks amazing. Can't wait to get there. Have fun!

As markcw already wrote, agriturismo.it has a great selection of agriturismo listings, and useful filters to zero in on an area and features you want. Booking.com has some listings, but they are mixed in with all of their other options. A Google search on agriturismo in Tuscany will give you other options as well.

Thank you everyone, definitely sounds like we want an agriturismo.

@joann Collungo looks great. Did the stay include breakfast and meals, what kind of experience was it?

@kmora58608, Masseto looks amazing as well and it's open exactly during my dates. I'll look into it

@markcw thank you looking at the website, need to look at my needs to filter exactly but that is a good start.

@ottawanderer thank you definitely looking at google as well
